Journal Entry 1 by BananaForce from Minneapolis, Minnesota USA on Tuesday, October 26, 2004
In 1918, 12-year-old Pam Lowder and her father raise the strongest and healthiest homing pigeons on the entire North Caroline coast. Pam and her father have even trained their pigeons to carry messages at night, a time when most birds refuse to fly. After Papa leaves to fight in World War I, Pam's pigeons are the only bright spot in her life. So when a stranger with a foreign accent comes to town and offers to buy Pam's birds, she can't bring herself to sell. When her birds begin to disappear, Pam wonders if the stranger is stealing them. As she investigates, she comes to suspect that he is not only a thief but a spy - and is using her birds to aid the enemy. A gently thoughtful reading by Stina Nielsen gives added depth and emotion to this exciting, best-selling American Girl History Mystery, richly crafted from actual historical events. Presented on 3 audio cassette tapes. (3.5 hours)

I enjoyed this heartwarming story of a girl growing up in NC. Her Dad is off in the war and she is responsible for their "Night Flying" pidgeons. She has few friends and has a wonderful relationship with animals and then some of her pidgeons come up missing. She sets out to find out who has stolen them. It has an excellent narrator too. This really appeals to me as my dad, who died four years ago, used to keep racing pigeons. So it'll remind me of him..Thanks Danes for a lovely parcel xxxx

I really enjoyed this book. Pam is a sassy yet totally believable 12 year old, and the background about the pigeons and her life in the South during the World War was interesting and illuminating..I was also reminded of my own childhood which can never be a bad thing! Going off to Smurphie in her returning audiobookbox number 3
