4 out of 10

I received this book today as a part of a book ring. I'm looking forward to reading it!

Update 7/1/05: I have finished reading this book. I don't know why, but I just couldn't get into it. Fortunately, it was not a long book and I was able to read it all without quitting. Not a terrible story, I think just not my cup of tea, so to speak. I have Gill846's address, but with the upcoming holiday weekend, it will be July 5th before I can mail this out.

Received two days ago. Unbeknownst to me, someone else spotted this on my wishlist and the day before this arrived, another copy came in the mail. What are the chances of that? Anyway, will mail on to the next in line.

Thanks for sharing!

Some confusion getting this book on its way. The next participant was listed as goatgirl. Well, after PMing a goatgirl in Texas, waiting, and receiving no answer (and realizing that she had no books listed on her shelf) it suddenly struck me, "wait a minute, I know a goatgrrl in New West, maybe the book is actually supposed to go to her!" Which of course it is, so it is now on its way to New West and not to Texas. Phew!

The Story of Lucy Gault arrived in today's mail. Thanks very much, pjmom8025 and gill846, for sharing this book and sending it along. It's up next on my reading pile, and I should have it off to Wormyone by the end of the month.

The Story of Lucy Gault begins in the fictional fishing village of Kilauran, County Cork on June 21, 1921, during the Anglo-Irish war. The town, historically populated by Protestant landowners, is embroiled in conflict, and many Protestants are making the decision to leave. Lucy, nearly nine years old, lives with her father, Captain Everard Gault, and her English mother Heloise on Lahardane, the family's beloved country estate.

Lucy Gault begins in a moment of violence: "Captain Everard Gault wounded the boy in the right shoulder on the night of June twenty-first, nineteen twenty-one." Gault has accidentally shot a young Catholic protestor called Horahan, who with a couple of friends was threatening to torch Lahardane. Though he tries to set things right with the boy's family, his efforts are unsuccessful. Gault soon determines he and his family must leave Lahardane -- and Ireland -- for their own safety.

What happens next is a tragedy and -- it's been suggested -- an allegory which tells not just "The Story" of Lucy Gault, but the story of Ireland itself in the 20th century. Inadvertently left behind following her parents' departure, Lucy is left at Lahardane to be raised by Henry and Bridget, the house staff. For decades on end the senior Gaults are incommunicado, living in a small town in Italy. Their failure to contact friends, neighbours or even their own house staff in Kilauran is how you know -- finally -- that Lucy Gault is more fable than not. (If you can't let go of your attachment to the literal, this book will drive you crazy...)

I found Lucy Gault to be a beautiful book, somewhat like reading a fairy tale only without the happy ending and the rigid distinctions between Good and Evil. Of all the Irish novels I've read this year (I recently finished Grace Notes and The Deposition of Father McGreevy), this was by far my favourite. Thanks again, pjmom and gill846.

You can read reviews of Lucy Gault in the Guardian here, the Observer here, the Weekly Standard here and The Age here

Received safely today. Thanks for sending it GoatGrrl (and for the wee badge) and for the ray PJMom8025.

Off to cross it off my wish list now.

...

I found this short book (it only took me about two or three hours) beautiful, poignant, moving, gentle and poetic. It tells of love and loss, of guilt and redemption, of the folly of living in the past and of the benefits of accepting one's fate. Thanks for sharing it.

Posted to Rlylv2Rd today but it suddenly occurs to me that I'm not sure the woman in the post office heard me when I said it was going to the US. Now I think about it, she didn't give me an air mail sticker and it seemed pretty cheap to send. So I don't know if it's got enough postage on it. Nor do I know what will happen if it hasn't. I hope it's OK and you don't get charged when it arrives. Let me know if you do and I'll send you the money via PayPal (so long as you can accept credit card payments). >:-\

4 out of 10

O.K., so I saved this book from destruction with Apaloosatb's PET project and then found a home for it (eriko1908 and pjmom8025). After reading so many great reviews, I had to get in on the fun, and read it myself...

Not my cup of tea, either, PaigeTurner124. I just couldn't get into the story and got mired in the details so much that by the end of the book I didn't really care what happened.

The implausibility of the premise of Lucy being left just put me off. Then as the story unfolded, and two prominent citizens just completely lost themselves (even in much simpler times this would have been pretty unlikely due to the circumstance of being wealthy and living off of inherited and invested monies). I didn't find the story believable or notably interesting...just really helpful in curing my insomnia.
