This book won the 1925 Newbery Medal and is a fast-paced collection of magical tales. My personal favorites are "The Hero Twins", "The Four Hundred", and "The Wonderful Mirror." Thanks, matwain, for sharing this book with me.

took me longer to get around to this than i'd orig. planned. i enjoy folk/fairytales in general, and this collection is esp. interesting as a comparison to the more well-known european ones (the magic dog is eerily similar to the famous french fairy tale donkeyskin). there are some great images and situations, and although more than a few sort of meander and fizzle out there were enough uniques ones to keep you reading to the end.

sending out as part of a newbery bookring!

Arrived safely, will read this week and pass along soon! Thanks!

I had a really difficult time with this one, which is unusual for me because I typically like fairytales like this. I did enjoy a few of the stories, but there were some I didn't finish. Maybe someday in the future I'll be in the mood for just this kind of narrative and pick it up and love it. Until then, this copy is off to tostle, in the post today.

Received today, with thanks! This paperback is showing its age a bit, so I'll try to be gentle with it.

Edit 2012: can't remember if this is the right cover or not, but I did have one like this pass through my hands at some point, so I'm throwing it in just because.

I enjoyed this collection of South American stories. One thing that was emphasized was "be careful what you wish for"...but I do wish I knew how to take better care of paperback books with sound pages but disintegrating covers. :(

I already have dancing-dog's address so I'll be sending this on soon.

I've had trouble getting into these stories so have just decided to give up for now and pass it along. I did rather like The Magic Dog though. The stories are short and quick but I just somehow had trouble getting interested in most of them. Have pm'd knitwit.

Not sure when this arrived as we were on vacation. I've read several of the older Newbery winners and I'm looking forward to this one. Thanks for sharing everyone!

Oh my goodness, I finished this ages ago and forgot to journal it. So sorry....

I actually enjoyed these odd-ball tales. They were different than I was expecting but that kept me guessing until the end in some cases. I can see how they would have a limited appeal though and I'm not sure that I'd recommend the book to my kids even but I did enjoy reading it.

In the mail to spacedog today.
