Journal Entry 1 by Loopylou127 from Hassall Grove, New South Wales Australia on Monday, October 18, 2004
A sweltering week in late August. Where better to enjoy the last days of summer than on the beautiful Bay of Naples?
But even as Rome's richest citizens relax in their villas aroung Pompeii and Herculaneum, there are ominous warnings that something is going wrong. Wells and springs are failing, a man has disappeared, and now the greaterst aqueduct in the world - the mighty Aqua Augusta - has suddenly ceased to flow....
Through the eyes of four characters - a young engineer, an adolescent firl, a corrupt millionaire and an elderly scientist - Robert Harris brilliantly recreates a luxurious world on the brink of destruction.

The story of the destruction of Pompeii in 79 AD - seen through the eyes of 4 different characters it is a wonderful blend of fact and fiction that keeps you enthralled despite knowing the destiny of the Ancient Roman City.

Am offering this up as an Austrlian bookray.

Journal Entry 5 by sally906 from Toowoomba, Queensland Australia on Monday, May 15, 2006

This book was very interesting. I thought it was going to be depressing but it was gripping instead. Could not put it down once started so glad I waited for a weekend to read it.

I have been looking forward to reading this one. Thanks sally906 for making it a bookring. I will get to it as soon as I finish the book I'm currently reading - shouldn't be too long!

Journal Entry 8 by bookfairy65 from Yass, New South Wales Australia on Tuesday, June 27, 2006
I really quite enjoyed this book, and as sally906 said, even though we know how the story ends, it is a fascinating read. It was also really interesting to read about the ancient Roman aquaducts - considering the day and age, they were an amazing example of engineering genius.

I will contact froggirlwendy for her details and get the book out to her ASAP.

I liked this book, both the way it was told through the eyes of 4 different characters and the for the way it was hard to distinguish fact from fiction.

Thanks for sharing sally. I will be posting it to Melanie2474 as soon as I have her address.

A great read and an interesting way to look at the days leading up to the eruption of Vesuvius.

Told through the eyes of four characters - an aquaduct engineer, an adolescent 'nouveau riche' girl, her corrupt millionaire father and the aging Pliny - the way each person views the events leading to the destruction of Pompeii gives the reader a feeling of being there as you experience their confusion and fear as their ordinary lives are consumed by disaster.
