Wonderful book! I finished this on the plane on the way to New Mexico, we were almost there when I finished it and I wondered, wow, are we here already? I was that wrapped up in the book! Stopped at Hastings books in Roswell and got books 2, 3 and 4.

Thank you WR! I started reading this last night and am almost finished with it, looking forward to reading the other books in this series.

From inside cover:
Young Alvin is the senenth son of a seventh son: such a birth is a powerful magic; such a boy is destined to become something special; and even in the loving safety of his home, dark forces reach out to destroy him.
For something will do anything to keep Alvin from growing up.

Seventh Son is the best work of short fantasy that I have read in a long time. I don't know why I would have expected any different; anything Orson Scott Card writes is outstanding. I enjoyed the way he created a picture of an alternate colonial America, complete with recognizeable historical figures. I look forward to reading the next installment in this series.

Thanks again to WingedMan for this bookring. I will send the book along to Dodau in the UK tomorrow.

Despite many interuptions from kids and annoying husband I managed to finish this yesterday, even staying up till nearly midnight to do it. It was a great story though it took me a little while to get into it. I have to admit being English I didn't recognise some of the people referred to in it but I'd still like to know what happens next, Maybe if we all bug WritinReader enough he/she will ring 2, 3 and 4 for us.

This book was very exciting! The author has made a very realistic alternative history and I liked the way magic and real historic events are all mixed up and how the presence of magic changes the course of history.

This book reminded me of the first season of HBO's Carnivale. It looked at the beginning like it was the entire story, but once you got into it, you realized that it was all just a teaser for the next intallment (book/season). The other similarity is that in both cases you can see that good and evil are going to have to battle, but it's not 100% clear which is which.

I've got book 2 towards the top of my TBR pile, and was excited to see that WingedMan has started Bookrays for the rest of the books in the series. I look forward to reading them all. Thanks again for organizing them WingedMan!
