Journal Entry 1 by Hawkette from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Tuesday, October 12, 2004
Going through the piles of books at St Vinnie's, this one caught my eye. I can never resist my love affair with Cambodia!

From the back...
'Everything changes for Channeary when the feared Khmer Rouge attack the Cambodian village that is her home. She begins a journey that takes her across war-torn, dangerous country and eventually leads her to a new life in Australia. But can Channeary find peace from her nightmares in a place so different from everything she has known?'

Journal Entry 2 by Hawkette from Sydney CBD, New South Wales Australia on Friday, November 5, 2004
The story of a young girl and her family escaping Cambodia, as the Khmer Rouge takes their hold. The desparation, the horrors, and the misfortune and loss. Once making it across the border, Channeary is taken in by a sweet monk and an Australian working in the refugee camps. After several years helping in the camps, Channeary has the opportunity to be adopted by Mary, and taken home to live in Australia. The cultural shock and adjustments are then another ordeal for someone who had endured so much.

I had often wondered how the Khmer girls I was working with in Cambodia would cope with coming to live here in Australia. The second part of this story showed the harsh cultural 'Aussie-ness'. Very, very different from the reverend respect shown in Khmer culture.

The bond with Bill, her Australian grandfather, is quite sweet, and benefically for both of these troubled souls.

I am going to ytake this one along to Melbourne Meet Up on Tuesday, to shard with a fellow BookCrosser.

Picked at the meetup last night. Looks like a good read Hawkette - I always enjoy ones you have also liked. I planned to read and release in Sydney on the weekend, but may send this to the UK instead as I am looking for a couple of good aussie books to send to kangaroo.

This book is written quite simply and I believe it was targeted at lower secondary school literature level in Australia. It held my interest while it was about Channeary's life in Cambodia and in the refugee camp in Thailand because the writing was detailed and evoked a clear picture of the events and sympathy for her. When the story shifted to her life in Tasmania I found the writing of the events in her life more sketchy.
A quick read which highlighted the intolerance towards immigrants from some of the students in the country area of Tasmania where Channeary found herself.
Hopefully our views towards refugees are more accepting since this was written in 1991.
