My TBR pile is so overwhelming that I have to start weeding it out! I brought this one to the mini-meetup! Enjoy!

Journal Entry 5 by SerenityBlue from Toronto, Ontario Canada on Tuesday, October 4, 2005
There were so many books on the table tonight at the mini meetup to meet with vacationing British bc'ers ozone-nut and tinynudewoman and we had a wonderful time she says eating her cheese and onion crisps and wishing her gall bladder wasn't bothering her so she could attack the Turkish Delight.
We didn't know whom brought what and I was reading the back of this and was completely enthralled and it went into my bag and now as I journal it I have a wonderful suprise seeing as it was registered by my wonderful friend Lotusflower77 coincidentally whom I am going to visit for the first time this coming weekend:) Thanks Ri and great seeing you again:)

This for me was a very interesting story. Because in 1967 we moved from England to the West end of Toronto for one year and then up north 70 miles to a very small town like West Gull. I imagined myself slotting people I had known into the characters of this book. This is what small town Canada was like then. One family with money in the whole town controlling mostly everything. For the years I lived there nothing seemed to change with the exception that the sons took over from the father. This was farming land too. I can imagine poor Elizabeth conned into loving this man who stole her heart at so young an age, she never knowing what small town life was - in a word - boring!! I know for a fact in our town there were affairs that people thought were secrets. A young boy went missing and was never found. I don't blame Elizabeth our heroine sort of for seeking happiness with someone else and I can appreciate her not having the guts to ruin her marriage and tell all including the parentage of her only son. I can see her dream of escaping dismal rural life teaching the same families decade after decade knowing that their lives would probably not change much from that of their parents and few but ever stray far from home but inherit the businesses of their fathers. I feel sorry for Carl throughout this whole novel. To have killed one's own mother even accidentally must be something that you can never forget and as drugs were not an option back then alcohol was. I hoped above hope that he and Chrissy would get back together but she had accepted her life with her old boyfriend even though he beat her which was also not unusual in the narrow minds of small town folk where the men were always the head of the household. The novel brought back memories for me. Thank you Lotusflower and Ri:) I think I will save this one for the 2006 Toronto BC Convention:)
