In my effort to get through all the books received from other BCers, I finally read this one that has been sitting on Mt. TBR for almost a year.

I felt like this book really got off to a slow start but picked up in the middle. I debated putting it down more than once but, with SpikesMom's influence, kept reading. And it was worth it. I thought I knew how the story would turn out and I was right about some points and wrong about others.

I ran the nursery at a shul for several years while I was in high school and babysat frequently for many of the members so I considered myself fairly knowledgable about Orthodox Jewish traditions, rituals, etc. Boy, was I wrong, what I knew was only the tip of the iceberg. I learned so much more from this book and know there is still a lot more to learn.

The most important thing I learned from this book was the danger in "judging a book by its cover" so to speak. How many times have I joined a group of friends in making assumptions about a new member of a community (work, neighborhood, etc.) without getting to know them? How many times have I listened to what other people say about someone without getting to know them myself? And how many times have I been on the other side of the coin? I will definitely watch my actions toward newcomers/outsiders much more closely in the future and try not to fall into that trap again!

Overall, I enjoyed Tova Mirvis' writing style and the story. Thanks, twiggywig, for sharing this book in Marci's bookbox.

I agree with Alsgal, this book did get off to a slow start, but then picked up. I learned a lot about Orthodox Jewish customs, much moreso than I did as a child eating at a friend's house and wondering what the candles and such meant.

I also think that Batsheva was judged unfairly simply because she was new and different. Those differences frightened the other ladies and made many of them unable to see her past their preconceptions. I really enjoyed this book and will be on the lookout for other titles by this author.

Going to Kiri who chose it from a bookbox.
