Update: 12/15/2004 This was an excellent read. I was familiar with the story, given that it's an SF classic and I've caught parts of the movie on TV. I was never engaged enough to watch the whole thing and I guess I transferred the feeling to the novel and expected a "good idea, poor execution" book. It turns out that Margaret Atwood has a great narrative voice. This made me really like the main character (since the story is told in first person). Offred came across as a tough, intelligent woman, yet very, very human in her longing for her past life, from small things like perfume and cigarettes to her family and friends. From the start, I enjoyed the descriptions of Serena Joy's garden. I felt almost guilty when I got to Offred's explanation for their inclusion, later in the book. Yesterday I came across a news article about a 'behaviour-modification center' for teenagers in Tranquility Bay, Jamaica. Their techniques reminded me of the Rachel and Leah Re-Education Center in the book. Scary stuff. I'll try to send the book to Ixion this week. Update: 12/16/2004 Ixion asked to be skipped. PMing Butternuet. |
