I couldn't finish this; it's one of the most turgid, pretentious books I've ever made the mistake of buying. I tried to get through it a number of times, but each time I put it down I found myself more reluctant to pick it up again, until in the end I gave up. Leave aside the fake and inauthentic footnotes (and the even more inauthentic Ancient Greek text which the author is supposed to be translating); even leave aside the ludicrous (but sadly authentic) critical-theory verbiage; the problem is that reading this is like wading through treacle.

Is there anyone out there (aside from the critics and the panel who awarded it the 2002 CWA Macallan Gold Dagger) who'll enjoy it? We'll see.
