"With an early promise not to 'Strunk you over the head with rules about style', Lerner, a former editor in New York's top publishing houses, provides inspiring, uncondescending advice for writers." Entertainment Weekly

"[Lerner] doesn't preach on how to write a book but rather tries to help writers and would-be authors cope with such problems as being 'alone with it.' It's a survival course. She wants to help the writer who cannot get started embark, the writer stalled between projects ignite. She wants you to be an effective 'self-promoter' and not a 'self-saboteur'. The book is also an affirmation that late bloomers can become successful writers." The New York Times

Part of a book ring. I'm first on the list and I will try to read as quickly as possible. :)
Thanks, Leaf. :)

Well, this was a very interesting read. Quite the eye opener! I had quite the glam fantasy of what an editor did but this has dispelled all that! It looks like a very difficult job, with long hours and rather thankless. I found the author's description of thew different types of writers, publishers, editors etc fascinating. This book is a great insite.

A really fascinating book, full of insights from an editor turned agent. She definitely nailed a lot of the things that stop me from writing, most of them utterly fixable and certainly my own fault. Very much enjoyed reading it, and learned a lot.

What a journey to get this book back on the road again! After working my way down the list that was originally set up I've found someone who's still in a position to remain on the bookring, and the book's going in the post today. Sorry it took so long -- I probably wait longer than I should before I give up on someone responding, and usually send a couple of mails. Thanks once again for sharing, I really enjoyed.

REceived this on return to Australia this week, and have almost finished it. It is a great read and has great advice for those aspiring to write. For those without writer's ambitions it's still a great read...fascinating insight into the publishing world. Will send off to Lakelady2282 asap.

This is an excellent book. It felt as though a good friend was giving me advice. It is wonderfully readable, and I have read it a couple of times now. Very easy to sit up and read in bed with...and it inspires one to write, even though it's not a 'how to write' book.

I have pm'd lakelady2282, so that I can send it on to her, but still waiting, so if I haven't heard within a day I will send it back to LeafofHumanTree.

This was a very interesting and helpful book. I think it answered just about every question I have ever had about the publishing world, shattering a lot of illusions into the bargain. I liked her insight about rejection slips: only you can allow a rejection slip to make you give up. You give it that power, no one else. Her list of the rungs that you have to climb up from form letter to publishing contract helped me place where I am on that ladder. Thanks so Ravenbear and LeafOfHumanTree. Will read the other book soon.

Yeah! I have been loking forward to reading this book for quite a while! I wonder if it will encourage me to pluck up the courage to send a manuscript off to a publisher??? I'm such a wusss! LOL!!!

I'll get to this book just as soon as I can - I have a couple of bookring or library books that I must read first so I hope a couple of months is ok? Thanks for sending it! :-)

UPDATE:
I have begun reading this book at last. 'Real life' got in the way for the past month due to the fact we are going through an 'accreditation process' at the 'after school care' I work at so life has been incredibly busy and a tad stressful! Other bookrings are now finished, so I have started on this book! :-)

Finished at last! I enjoyed reading it and picked up a few good tips. Thanks for lending it to me Leaf :-)

I am sorry it took so long for me to get through it. Last year was not a good year due to my work situation; then I got a few books sent to me for the Aussie convention and I wanted to read a couple before passing them on, and THEN everytime I picked it up to read a few more pages a bookring would arrive on my doorstep! Why oh why do they all come at once!?? So I have held onto this book way longer than I intended to. Thanks for being patient. I'll mail it back to you early next week.

Thank you for returning the book, aussie-rose! Thank you, too, for the bookmarks and bookplate. Best wishes and may you have success with your writing.

This book is going back into my permanent collection.
