Journal Entry 1 by BananaForce from Minneapolis, Minnesota USA on Tuesday, September 21, 2004
Presented on 4 Audio Cassette Tapes (5 hours 42 minutes) That fool of a fairy Lucinda did not intend to lay a curse on me. She meant to bestow a gift. When I cried inconsolably through my first hour of life, my tears were her inspiration. Shaking her head sympathetically at Mother, the fairy touched my nose. "My gift is obedience. Ella will always be obedient. Now stop crying, child." I stopped. So begins this richly entertaining story of Ella of Frell, who wants nothing more than to be free of Lucinda's gift and feel that she belongs to herself. For how can she truly belong to herself if she knows that at any time, anyone can order her to hop on one foot, cut off her hand, or betray her kingdom--and she'll have to obey? Against a bold tapestry of princes, ogres, giants, wicked stepsisters, and fairy godmothers, Ella's spirited account of her quest to break the curse is a funny, poignant, and enchanting tale about an unforgettable heroine who is determined to be herself.

A very cute story. I watched the movie version several months ago. It's loosely based on the book, but the stories are very different. For once, I can honestly say that I loved both versions of the story (I usually love one or the other-- the book OR the movie). I enjoyed Ella's personality and sense of humor. The woman that read the book did a great job with the different character voices-- and with the different imaginative languages (like ogre and elf). PM me if you're interested in borrowing or trading for this BOT. :)

I haven't had time to listen to this story, but it looks like such a good one (spunky female protagonist), that I had to include it in the G2W bookbox. Hope someone else will enjoy it!

This is one of my favorite retellings of the Cinderella story. I am taking it out of the G2W to share with my mom (who is beginning to enjoy Books-on-tapes of all types. She was never a reader and now with her having vision troubles Audiobooks give us something to share. I will be adding Nancy Drew #2 - The Hidden Staircase into the G2W box to replace this one
