Sent on it's way for the International RABCK Sweepstakes. I have enjoyed Magnus Mills' short stories for years.

Enjoy!

'He has no literary precedent, and he also appears to have no imitators. He mines a seam that no one else touches on, every sentence in every book having a Magnus Mills ring to it that no other writer could produce' - "Independent". In "Hark the Herald", a guest stays at an eerie guesthouse over Christmas without encountering any other residents, despite constant reassurance from the landlord that he would see them if only he arrived for breakfast slightly earlier; in "Only When the Sun Shines Brightly", Aesop's fable about a competition between the Sun and the Wind to get a man to take his coat off, gets a new look involving a railway arch, a builder and a piece of plastic sheeting; and, in "Once in a Blue Moon", a man arrives home to find the family house under siege, with his mother armed, dangerous and firing at the police with a shotgun, and attempts to appease her with an invitation to seasonal hospitality. In the title story, rivalry between three cousins over a faulty toy gets out of hand as the cousins unwittingly imitate the toy they're fighting over. Magnus Mills has published two collections of stories - "Only When the Sun Shines Brightly" and "Once in a Blue Moon" - which are collected here together with four new stories for the first time to make a set of twelve.

Never heard of Magnus Mills, but looking forward to meeting him. Thanks!
I'm writing this on my tea-break at work and having the delicious Stash liquirice & spice tea you sent. And I've never seen that teapot BC-card before, so cool.

Tried the first two chapters, but I don't seem to be getting into "the utterly surreal world of Magnus Mills" as it is described on the back cover.

This book spent 7 months stored with other books left on the table at Kaapelitehdas. I read it, too. Mostly. Quite a few of the stories are set in Christmastime, or close to it, so this will make a nice season release.

It's already Easter and Magnus was still at Pilkku. It's high time he sees the Big Wide World - he will travel to the Oxford Convention with me 📚.

Picked this up today, thinking it was just the thing to mail to a certain Kirjakko. I get home and prepare to journal it and find it's already been through her hands! Of all the books, in all the world, I had to pick this one!

At least I might get chance to read it myself now, when Mrs D has finished with it!

P.S. Hello Kirjakko. Hello Han_cat.

That was fun. A nice collection of off-beat stories. It was just the antedote I needed after the tortuous biography I abandoned in January. And halfway through I realised that I had already read one of Magnus Mills books, The Maintenance of Headway, a fascinating book for a transport buff and great fun for normal people too!

I found this book in a phone box in the tiny village of Horton in Ribblesdale where I was on a walking holiday.
It travelled with me by train back to Manchester, UK when I read 3 chapters.....
