Book Description
Two twins, Ginny and her blind sister Emily, and their French mother disappeared from their comfortable family home in Wolverhampton in 1926 and no one has seen them since. What drove pretty, fragile Hortense to sweep up her daughters and flee? The death of their father? Or the barely concealed ambitions of their uncle Claude who plans to control the highly successful family firm?Ten years later aspiring solicitor, Charlie Commoner, is dispatched to France to find the family and to expedite the will of the twins’ grandfather. What he finds instead is a mystery, a tragedy – and a passionate and involving love affair. The reasons for their abrupt departure from England have never been clear to the twins and Hortense is resolute in keeping them secret. By 1936 they have become Frenchwomen, living near Amiens with Old Joliot, a soldier from the Great War, and the childlike Berthe. Together they have survived prejudice, hardship and Hortense’s ill health. Now the faint, but ominous, threat of the Second World War is gathering on the horizon. But, worse than exile and political upheaval, a new shadow is cast over their lives – for Ginny and Emily discover that they are dogged by a terrible and terrifying disease . . .Written by the bestselling author of London Pride and War Baby, big, heart-warming, poignant and stirring, Two Silver Crosses is the story of a mother and her daughters, of war’s legacy, of the triumph of faith – and of love’s power to heal and make whole.

Again, thank you Meranis for lending me this book ,I hope to enjoy reading
it, but never judge a book by its bookplate.

Well, I hate to say so, but I found this book a little too melodramatic for my taste, and full of incoherence. Everything about "the illness", and Maman (and the girls) being so neurotic about it...

And I'm still wondering why the tittle is "Two Silver Crosses". What's their importance, at the end, to be constantly remembered all along the story?

Anyway, thanks again to ChinaSourcer for sending it in.

It goes now to Iahra, who won it at the RABCK-Lottery.
