Henry Chester, a domineering and puritanical Victorian artist, is in search of the perfect model. In nine-year-old Effie he finds her. Ten years later, lovely, childlike and sedated, Effie seems the ideal wife. But something inside her is about to awaken. Drawn by her lover, Mose, into a dangerous underworld of intrigue and blackmail, she meets Fanny Miller, the brothel-keeper, and her shadowy daughter, Marta - murdered ten years ago on the day of Henry's weekly visit... And as friendship becomes possession and Henry's secret past is revealed, Effie and Marta plan their revenge together.

This was a strange book - not Joanne Harris' 'Chocolat' style at all. That said, she still evokes a sinister, almost disturbing atmosphere throughout the book, and kept me wondering.
It took a few chapters for me to get into it, but i found the characters all very intriguing.
i am glad of having had thre chance to read this earlier work of Harris', so thanks to Nordie!

If all goes to plan, I will take this book to be released at the Newcastle Book Crossers' meeting in Newcastle (surprisingly enough ;=)) next Tuesday evening. It might then go to someone who will also appreciate it before it is passed on again!

Victorian Gothic, I raced through this one, missing some of the fine language. A little bit uneven, but a good read.

I've never ead any of Harris' work, so can't compare this to Chocolat, etc. I thought it was a great story, the language was rich and dark and although there are moments of uneven writing, I really enjoyed it.

Picked up at the Unconvention - I've thoroughly enjoyed her other novels, so I thought this would be interesting to read

I'm not normally a fan of the Gothic, but I thought this book was excellent. It did show signs of being an early novel by the author, but that's okay - I've read a lot worse from established writers!

The book reminded me a little of Anita Shreve's All He Ever Wanted in that a seemingly respectable, rational man was jealous and controlling - Henry drugs Effie to keep her calm and sedated. As well as Henry's disturbing behaviour towards Effie, his prediliction for young prostitutes is rather distasteful - although not unusual for the time.

The supernatural elements are woven well into the plot, and a tense and creepy atmosphere is maintained throughout. It's not the cosy and comfortable read of Chocolat, but if you've read Jigs and Reels, you will know that Harris has a darker side, too.
