I started reading this book and got about 50 pages in. Just not my thing. Her writing is very poetic and she flips from 1st to 3rd person and back again. I wouldn't necessarily mind this but it does get a bit annoying and the main character is so irritating!! I know there are many of us women who think like her but all compacted into 285 pages gets me down. I usually like to push myself to the end of a book because you never know how it's going to turn out, but I have a couple of hundred books I'd like to read just at home....not including the millions in the stores!! I'm more choosy now. Oh well.
Maybe Ibis3 will enjoy it more than myself!

Given directly by gumshoe007 -- thanks so much! It was great to meet you; hope you have a wonderful new year filled with books of which you enjoy every page! (If not, just move on & no more guilt :) )

p.s. I'm currently reading The Tomorrow-Tamer, same writer but short stories set in Africa. You might like that one better.

8 out of 10

I'm so far behind in my journalling. I hadn't realized that I'd never done my journal entry for this book when I finished reading it back in February! I'm just getting ready to send it out on a bookring so I guess I'd better update the journal record.

I remember feeling rather annoyed with Stacey at the beginning—reading about someone else's depression and desperation is not exactly fun. But by the time I got to the Superware party I had changed my attitude. I got to really like the rebellious spirit that Stacey was still holding on to. I ended up reading from the Richalife party straight through to the end.

This book is as topical today as in 1969, despite the advances of feminism. This would make a good book for a book club to read.

This was waiting for me when I returned from a week at the River. I'm reading another right now, but should get to this one soon :-)

6 out of 10

Well, I'm with the first two journallers pretty much. This book was very annoying to start, or should I say that Stacey was very annoying to start. I never really did get to like her character, even at the end. But I did get through to the end. I don't know - I just kept thinking 'buck up, buttercup', even though I can understand where her mundane and repetitive days were wearing her down. I guess I just think more along the lines that our lives are what we make it. To Stacey's credit, she did liven things up near the end ... but I don't want to write any spoilers ;-P

Will be mailing off to ldpaulson hopefully today or tomorrow.

UPDATE: Mailed on Monday, Sept 10, 2007. Enjoy :-) Brewster13
