Journalist Carcaterra tells with gripping force of his days growing up in the tough New York City neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen in the 1960s (the names have been changed to protect the innocent and the guilty). He and his three closest buddies engaged in petty crime until the day their tricks got out of hand and escalated into a major offense, for which they were sent to a juvenile home in upstate New York.
My husband read this and loved it, and I agree with him, its a gripping and gritty book. I have heard that there is some doubt over whether the story is true, there being no hard evidence from newspapers etc,but I don't think anyone could have made up a story like this.
I haven't seen the film but will seek it out as well as trying to find some of the authors other books.
