This book will now be a book ray, I just have to share this book. I would like to see it be an ongoing RABCK when it makes it to its last destination, possibly Germany. When you receive the book journal it and try to read it within 4-5 weeks. This book is a quick and fun read. When you finish reading the book pm the next person in line and send it off. Thanks for joining. I hope everyone gets a kick out of Sedaris. Members: pchemphd- Florida Maurean- Florida Weeblet- Virginia illinicheme- Ca. Journal Entry 7 by Maurean from Atlantic Beach, Florida USA on Thursday, September 25, 2003
Hmmm.... After reading so many wonderful reviews, and hearing many teriffic recommendations, I could hardly wait to get a chance to read this. Eh. Many passages elicited a smile, and a few made me chuckle, but laugh-out loud? Nope. Sorry. Didn't happen. I did get a giggle from his French classes in Paris, and I even found his memories of Melina heart-warming. I don't know...maybe my funny-bone is broken? I just wasn't overly impressed. So....I'm sending this off to Weeblet tommorrow (9/26), in the hopes that she and those that follow enjoy it more than I.

Journal Entry 9 by weeblet from Jacksonville, Florida USA on Monday, October 06, 2003

the beginning of this book actually depressed me, truth be told... but i stuck around and really came out enjoying it. as my sense of humor rarely transcends the sophomoric, i was delighted by 'you can't kill the rooster', and 'big boy'. the latter was read aloud last night for company (it's *lots* funnier aloud...). i'll be keeping my eye out for his other books. thanks, janaqq!

Arrived safely in California today. I just got hit by three rings at once, but I should still get to this in a timely fashion. Looking forward to finally reading it!

This was a very enjoyable read, though it seems to have suffered a little bit from overhype. As with any collection of short, stand-alone pieces, some hit the mark, some were way off, and most were somewhere in between. Overall, I thought Deux was a much stronger section than One. Although I did get a few laughs from the first half, I felt that he was trying too hard. (I enjoy crudeness as much as the next person, and am not offended by it, but in some of the pieces I felt that he wasn't using it effectively. It seemed to be more of "hmmm....well, if I just use a cuss word, that'll make it funny!") Overall a worthwhile and fairly quick read. My personal favorites included Go Carolina, 21 Down, and all of the pieces about French class. This is on its way to Jas330 as of this morning. Thanks for starting this bookray janaqq!

I'm done. :-) I really enjoyed this book. I'm not really sure what I was expecting, I don't every really remember reading about what it was about, just hearing that it was good. Anyways -- I really enjoyed it an will be passing on to Maddymonkey sometime within the next week.

Journal Entry 15 by maddymonkey from Minneapolis, Minnesota USA on Tuesday, January 06, 2004
Arrived in the post yesterday. Since I'm currently reading a book of essays and this is similar, I think I'll start on it immediately, one piece at a time.

I found Part One really dreary. It seemed Sedaris wanted me to commiserate with him about family and childhood -- ugh! -- and it wasn't amusing enough to counterbalance that. Part Deux, however, is very clever, insightful, funny writing. Loved the comparison of his childhood to Hugh's -- how the verbs were the same, but Hugh had him beat at nouns and objects. Loved the lamentation of trying to explain the outward trappings of a litigious society, though I couldn't believe he didn't use my favorite silly warning (on hair dryers: DO NOT USE WHILE SLEEPING). Letra has passed for now, so the book's in the post to Zyana today. When I handed the package to the postal clerk, she actually said to me: "Portugal...Is that Spain or France?" I got nervous for a second that maybe it was some kind of trick question.

Journal Entry 17 by Zyana from Porto - City, Porto Portugal on Tuesday, January 27, 2004
Arrived today safe and sound. I have 3 other bulky bookring books in front of it but I have great expectations for these book on account of the journal entries posted here so I'm sure I'll get busy with it soon enough. Thank you so much MaddyMonkey for sending me this one! (I found it funny if not dismaying that the post office clerk didn't know where Portugal was, but then again it comes as no surprise ... most Americans don't. But she was at least spot on on the geographic location.)

I'm terribly annoyed because just when I had made a thoughtful, coherent and structured review on this book and the impression it made on me my pc froze and I had to restart it hence loosing all the explanation i had written down explaining why I rated this book so low. I'm pretty frustrated right now and can't imagine going into all that again so I'll journal again when I'm past this pc-fury. Meanwhile I'd like to note that the book has been mailed today to the next person on the ring. 177

"Arrived today safe and sound. I have 1 1/2 other bulky bookring books in front of it but I have great expectations for these book on account of the journal entries posted here so I'm sure I'll get busy with it soon enough." to quote my predecessor (with a slight change in numbers).

Journal Entry 20 by IrasCignavojo from Tübingen, Baden-Württemberg Germany on Wednesday, May 12, 2004

After finishing the other books in the way I seriously started reading David 'Thedarith'. Well you could say we have some things in common, like the company our fathers worked at (up to the pencils), me not caring much for sports (except in rare occasions when I cherish a snobby team loosing), rather "baking scones and cupcakes" or watching sentimental old movies in the same company, not caring much for the instrument lessons I received, even reading a thesaurus to improve the wording at an early age - but I don't think that ever, at any given period of my life, someone would have called my tongue lazy ;-)
