Boy - I read this book ten years ago or thereabouts and released my copy into the wild. Since then we went to an indoor market and I picked up a couple of copies of this book!

So I'm offering one of them up as my first bookring. Why should you read it? Because it's a great story with interesting resonances to the modern day and the war on terror. It was written in 1907 after Nostromo and The Mirror of the Sea and deals with the life of a secret agent (anarchist) and his family.

There's an excellent preface by the author - (but I never read these until I've read the novel - I don't like spoilers!)

The list of particpants so far, the ring is still open so if you're interested, PM me:

I did find it rather hard going early on but once I got into it I found it quite compelling.
Posted this morning to cadelagarza.
Hope she enjoys it.

I really had a hard time getting into this book. I dont know why, maybe it just wasn't meant for me. I passed this on to Brujula. She should be getting it soon!

It's a hard book to get into.
The descriptions are not easy to read, the font and size is really tiny in this edition (which makes it even harder to read!), at first you don't really know where the author is going.
And then you get caught by the characters and the intrigue, although none of them is really likeable.

I'm glad I read this book, although I don't think I liked it. I do understand why it's a classic, though!

So, thank you MargeryK for sharing this book!
I'll mail it back to you as soon as I have your adress.

Many thanks Brujula! Received safe and sound last week through the post. Hubby has been reading it since and only now have I managed to get my hands on it again.

Thank you everyone for taking part in the bookring.
