This book is the latest by PD James, but I hope not the last, though I wouldn't bet on it seeing she was born in 1920.

We meet again with Commander Dalgliesh and his crew, but this time (and it's a first) he's in love !!! But that doesn't stop him from pursuing his search for the truth with his usual elegance.

What I found strange was when I suddenly realised that I was halfway through the book and nothing had happened yet, but I hadn't been bored for a single moment...

A very, very pleasant read. On the one hand I agree with you meliluc that the book takes a bit to get going but just like you I did not mind at all because Ms. James' prose is so beautiful to read and I like the characters so much.
Regarding the solving of the case, I think she relies on chance too much on one occasion (I prefer not to go deeper into this here, you'll probably know what I'm talking about after reading the book). But this minor flaw did not dampen my pleasure in reading this book at all.
Finally, I agree with you Meliluc, hopefully this is not the last book by P.D.James, I absolutely need to know what will happen to Dagliesh and his colleagues in the future. Thanks again for starting the ring!

Edit 05.10.: Sent to Genevalove today

Another compelling mystery from P.D. James. I love the character of Adam Dalgliesh, and this story didn't disappoint. I didn't have any idea who did it until the murderer's identity was revealed--which made feel kind of silly when Dalgliesh says something like "I think we all know who did it." Not me! But that's the way I like it--if I can figure it out, it was probably way too obvious. Thanks for meliluc for starting this bookring! The Murder Room will be heading for the United States tomorrow morning (maybe by the time it gets there, the election will have been decided...I hope!)

Arrived in yesterday's mail; I'm actually in the midst of another Dalgliesh mystery ("A Taste for Death") right now, but will start this one as soon as the Commander solves the other crime (double murder, so far; it sounds like there'll be more corpses soon).

12/13/04 - just a note....I'd read the comments above about Dalgliesh being in love in this book, and was somewhat offended that James had made him so fickle; I recently read another Dalgliesh novel in which he met and began to fall in love with a woman while working on a case. So, I was reading this morning on the bus and suddenly realized that it is the same woman - this is the next book! It is killing me (no pun intended) to not skip to the back and see if they get together - I was tempted to just ride the bus back home and call in sick today, and I may have to stay up tonight and finish this so I can find out :-) I don't even care who gets killed or why, at this point!

12/16/04 - A first - I guessed the correct murderer! And a sigh - why aren't men in real life more like Dalgliesh? Is it too weird to have a crush on a fictional character?!

12/23/04 - mailed to Icila

Waouh !!! A book from Albuquerque after Shanghai !!!

2 gifts in one pack. Thanks again for the ring.

01/27/05 : I just finished the book. I enjoyed read in english. There are many descriptions and the investigation is very long .
Like the previous reader I was surprised with the Dagliesh's falling in love. I have read a novel where Emma is his official lover. I think that book was written before and post published by lack of new novel.

Anyway I enjoyed it.

I send it to plumedelapin.

well, as expected it occupied some of my time during my holidays... it travelled with me on the other side of atlantic ocean, and I brought it everywhere, even at the swimmingpool (keep quiet! I take care of it!)... Now I've finished it and enjoyed it (I must confess that it was the first PD James I read *shame on me*). It is a little bit classical thriller, but surprising anyway. it is now peacefully recovering from its long trip, in my bookcase, waiting to return to its' owner...
Thanks a lot meliluc!
