As this installment in the Myron Bolitar series opens, Myron has gone into seclusion in the Caribbean on St. Bacchanals, an island owned by a major cruise line (the island shore excursion). Myron is staying with Terese, a career news person, at the home of the CEO of the cruise line on the side not used by tourists. Myron has been gone 6 weeks, totally overwhelmed by grief, trying to get away from everyone and everything. It is in the midst of this getaway that along comes Win, old friend & partner of Myron's. Obviously something is up, something that led Win to seek Myron, since he had told no one where he was. Myron also knows that if Win's looking for him, it's time to go home. Sure enough, once he's on board Win's yacht, he finds out that his sports agency partner, Esperanza Diaz, has been arrested for the murder of Clu Haid, a client & old friend of Myron's, as well as a NY Yankees pitcher. There's enough evidence to link her to Haid's murder, and to top it off, she and Haid had gotten into a fight the day before he was killed. Esperanza has now been put in jail waiting for her trial.

Once back in NY, Myron tries to help her, but she won't tell him anything. Neither will her lawyer, at her request. So what else can he do but investigate Haid's death on the sly. His investigations take him not only into weird bar scenes but back into his own past. And it is here I will stop with my review of the plot.

I liked this book. It was (imho) a much better piece of writing than the other Bolitar series books I've read. There's still the same sense of humor, the same characterization, but in this book, Coben seems a lot more serious & really gets into the meat of the story much faster and with a little more depth than those previously written.

recommended for mystery readers who want a quick, easy read.
