A 2000 novel by Irish-Canadian novelist Emma Donoghue. Purchased from "Pulp Fiction", as I'll be hearing Donoghue read at the Vancouver International Writers' Festival next month.

I wanted to enjoy Slammerkin more than I actually did, since I'll be hearing Donoghue read from the book in a couple of weeks. Unfortunately, I found that this novel promised much -- in terms of historical detail, and insight into the life of a woman living in another century -- and didn't deliver enough. I also found the behaviour of many of the characters (including the protagonist, Mary Saunders) seemed more like that of 20th century people than those living in the 1760s, an annoying lapse. A shorter book, more thoroughly researched so as to include details more faithful to the time and place in which the story occurs, would have been great. As it was, I skimmed through the last 100 pages, looking forward to the inevitably tragic ending. Not particularly recommended, I'm afraid, but I hope someone else's mileage may vary.

I'm mailing this book as a RABCK to kelwood in Toledo, Ohio, since I just finished it and saw it on her wishlist. I hope you'll enjoy the book -- I just saw Emma Donoghue's new book at a local bookstore tonight -- it's another work of fiction based on historical research. Happy reading!

Just received this today as a very generous RABCK from goatgrrl. I'm looking forward to it. Thank you so much!

P.S. I love the bookmark. It's a gorgeous view!

7 out of 10

While I felt compelled to keep reading this story, I'm not sure that I liked it as much as I'd hoped. The characters were interesting, if not entirely likable, and I keep thinking how different Mary's life could have been but for a few poor decisions.
