No idea what this one's about, but it's won the '87 Whitbread Prize for Fiction.
It's nice to find a book with a truly happy ending, but trawling through the terribly slow middle part meant that I was so glad to get there that I didn't appreciate it as much as I could have!

I agree that this is a very slow book, and it took me a long time to be caught by the story. But still, I like Ian McEwan's style very much: he mixes up very realistic thougths and events with unprobable events and magical thinking. His books picture a very strange world.
However, by the same author, I definitively prefer "The Cement Garden" or "Atonement".

I picked the book up in Namche Bazaar Nepal, took it with me to Mt Kailash in Tibet and I'm leaving it in Cranbury, New Jersey!
