This is scary! It's a sort of horror mystery - I think aimed at children or teens, certainly the language is deliberately simple - but for me it was even more effective than reading The Woman in Black. Some ideas in here were really creepy - I wasn't quite sleeping with the light on, but almost!

It's good, though, that Coraline is a resourceful girl who is able to fight the scary "other mother". Someone some day will write an essay analysing the psychology behind this ... available to anyone who'd like to read it, but I'm warning you, it's disturbing.

Thank you to freesia for sending it on via Poppy48 and to Poppy48 for reading and sending on so promptly! Will let you know what Other Half thinks of the book when he's read it, and then will pass on to anyone interested.

Journal Entry 6 by LyzzyBee from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Monday, October 11, 2004
I had this from Freesi via poppy48 for my other half, Matthew, to read.

He read it on our trip to Scotland (so the book has already travelled to Glasgow and back to London) and reported:

"Very good, reminded me of Roald Dahl"

Journal Entry 7 by LyzzyBee from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Monday, October 11, 2004
I have also read this now and thought it fair to put my own journal entry on!

I read this on the way back from Stansted Airport as I'd run out of my other books!

I thought it was really good - quite scary indeed - and reminiscent more of Narnia (the wood, talking animals, scary witch lady etc) than of Dahl (who I don't like!)

Great - highly recommended to kids and adults (good role model in the heroine!) and I'm going to bring it to the meet-up tomorrow to pass it on to someone else!

Picked up at the London Meetup! Many thanks - I look forward to reading Coraline!

Journal Entry 10 by Flambard from Horsham, West Sussex United Kingdom on Wednesday, October 20, 2004
Magnificent! Masterly and thrillingly disturbing. Neil Gaiman does it again. I loved the way in which he coined the term 'other mother' and uses it to such effect, and invests the simple idea of a needle and thread and a couple of buttons on a table with such understated menace. If you liked this one, I suggest you read the last story in his collection 'Smoke and Mirrors' - you'll never think of Snow White in the same way again......

Finished last night. Sorry for hanging on to it so long. I forgot it was a book ring. <> Anyway it is ready to go and as penance as soon as moimeme sends the address I will send it first class. Very enjoyable but definitely not children's reading. Scary. Creepy.

I came back home after a short vacation to find this book waiting for me. I'll start it right away.

Journal Entry 19 by Moimeme from Famões, Lisboa (distrito) Portugal on Saturday, April 23, 2005
Very good read, although, after reading the previous journal entries I was expecting something more scary...but with a character as brave and courageous as Coraline, the other world was a piece of cake:) I'll send it to hbrogan as soon as I have her address.
Thanks Flambard for the opportunity to read this book!

Sent on the 26th of April

Journal Entry 20 by hbrogan on Tuesday, May 17, 2005
Received last week, and I've read it already! It was a super fast read. I'd love to see this turned into a film--it was very "visual" as all of Gaiman's works seem to be. The beldam was quite disturbing. *shudder*

Thanks for sharing! I'll send it on as soon as I get an address!

Journal Entry 21 by Wistroll from Centuria, Wisconsin USA on Friday, June 3, 2005
Almost finished with the book I`m reading, this is next on list, should have it finished quickly and out to next person next week. Thanks for sharing!

I am so excited to read this!! My first Neil Gaiman book...yay.

Journal Entry 24 by sweetsangria from Estacada, Oregon USA on Saturday, July 23, 2005
This was a very quick, creepy read. I think the scariest part was when coraline was in the basement with the "other father". I will definately read more Neil Gaiman in the future. I'll pass this on as soon as I get an address for the next person.
