Stephen Booth sets his thrillers in the Peak Districe, capturing beautifully the bleak isolation and wildness of this part of Britain. Investigating missing persons here is not easy - the loneliness gets to some people; the attitude that you're a stranger if you live 5 miles down the road prevails in others. Getting the truth out of some people is like prizing open oysters.
I love his descriptions of the weather and the topography, the characters and the atmosphere. There is a rawness in this novel, that living in a wild and barren region can bring the primal to the fore, even in the 21st century.
