8 out of 10

As with most of my books, I picked this one up at a yard sale. I'd heard about it through Bust magazine and because my friend tried to look it up on the internet and got a lot of porn sites ;-) It's NOT a porn book, however, or even erotica. Rather it's an attempt to take back another word that is demeaning to women.

It's written in very informal language and does have some cuss words, but reading it feels like you're hanging out, having a fun conversation with the author. The strongest chapters are "Bleeding cunts" about menstruation, and "Rape not cunts". I did have a problem with the chapter on whores. She says that this was originally a sacred role, like that of a priest. Maybe it's just my fundy Christian upbringing, but I don't like the idea of temple prostitution or think it was empowering for women.

Overall, it's a funny, informative, powerful book. I'm going to see if anyone's interested in a bookring.

While the title of this book caught the stares and questions of many women around town, I found myself happy to explain the intentions behind the book. Much like the homosexual reclaims words like fag, queer, dyke, etc., the "cunt-loving" author has reclaimed the word cunt in her study of the "anatomical jewel." I would have liked to leave a few copies of this book around town, because I that all people benefit from reclaiming/reframing once negative points of reference.

Sending to portable-solace in Texas.

I would like to be a well-rounded person. I guess that would mean I travel in a circle, and at times my back is turned to certain things. This book added another section to my circle, which is not yet complete. My favorite chapter was "Acrimony of Cunts". What reason do women have to feel anything but friendship towards each other? I was a little put off my some of the "male-bashing", but to each their own. Very interesting to read, I feel I've learned something from this book. Thanks for sharing it!

I'll be passing it on when I get theory19's address.

This book was freakin' awesome! I enjoyed it very very much. I learned some new things, and was inspired by a few passages. I believe that the author could have used some discretion on what to include in certain chapters, as some things had nothing to do with what she was writing about, but overall, pretty good. This is something I want my daughters to read when they get older. After reading it, I felt...empowered. Yes.

so far, i have most enjoyed the chapter on masturbation. I don't know why 'woman-loving' always seems to be 'pro-goddess', but that annoys me. good grief, why does female masturbation have to become 'jilling off' too?

anyway, I am almost done.

have been waiting for address from may-eve. will try her again.

Sometimes it really just made me hate men, but overall it made me love women even more.

Thanks and sorry for the time I took.

I had really mixed feelings on reading this book. At times I wanted to stand and cheer Muscio's ideas.. at other times I felt like I was trapped in a room with a wild-eyed zealot!

I have for years stated that I felt women needed to reclaim the word 'cunt', in the same way that Greeks and Italians in Australia have reclaimed the word 'wog' - as a formerly pejorative word which is now used as an identifier of pride. Sadly, many of the women I have espoused this idea to are still too uncomfortable with the word to claim it as their own.

Muscio makes some good points in this work, but after a while I found myself becoming more distanced from her ideas and more irritated by some of the more 'out there' notions she puts forward and her occasionally strident way of making her point. I proudly proclaim myself as a feminist, and have shared houses with lesbian friends, and socialised with feminist separatists... but by the end of this work, I was 'over' the whole thing!!!! There's passionate... and then there's militancy taken to almost silly extremes - and I think that this tendency detracted from the overall point that Muscio wished to make.

That said.... I was engaged by some of the earlier parts of this book and found some interesting ideas in it.

I have PMed cestmoi for her address and will send it on as soon as I receive it.

Well this book has definitely become an albatross around my neck!!!

Everyone else on the list has either become inactive (including the ray's originator) or does not want this book.

Luckily id-rather-be-at is happy to take it off my hands. Thanks for that!

I got this today as part of a RABCK. How happy am I? I've started to read it already - there are tradesmen in and out today so I can't really get much work done. Ahh . . . the benefits of working from home.

Based on what I've read so far, I'm starting to form a similar opinion to you, lmn60. Of course, it will be hard for me to relate to the subject matter in a completely personal way, being a male . . . it is a book about being a woman and having a cunt, after all. After all, a book about the average male would be about being a cunt and having a (wo)man, but maybe I'm just upset about being dumped badly by the boy of my dreams.
