Journal Entry 1 by sheoak from Kalamunda, Western Australia Australia on Saturday, August 14, 2004
"Georgie Jutland is a mess. At forty, with her career in ruins, she finds herself stranded in White Point with a fisherman she doesn't love and two kids whose dead mother she can never replace. Her days have fallen into domestic tedium and social isolation. Her nights are a blur of vodka and pointless loitering in cyberspace. Leached of all confidence, Georgie has lost her way; she barely recognises herself. One morning, in the boozy pre-dawn gloom she looks up from the computer screen to see a shadow lurking on the beach below, and a dangerous new element enters her life. Luther Fox, the local poacher. Jinx. Outcast. So begins an unlikely alliance. Set in the wild landscape of Western Australia, this is a novel about the odds of breaking with the past, a love story about people stifled by grief or regret, whose dreams are lost, whose hopes have dried up. It's a journey across landscapes within and without, about the music that sometimes arises from the dust." I loved Luther, disliked Georgie, but then she didn't like herself either, she was in a really big hole. Luther is to die for, I lived through his wanderings in the north with him in one sleepless night of non stop reading. As are Winton's other books that I have read and enjoyed, this story is set in my own back yard. The Tuart trees and the limestone are a part of my personal landscape too.

Sent to Carlynlee today. Sorry it took me so long!! I was meaning to get around to meet you but it just isnt't going to happen. I hope you enjoy the book as much as me and my husband, and 2 other friends who have read it but not journalled. When you have finished I would prefer it if the book goes to someone who wants to read it. However if you can't find anyone then wild release it!

Journal Entry 5 by Carlynlee from Perth, Western Australia Australia on Monday, November 14, 2005
The language used in writing this book is just beautiful and so intoxicating, once again Tim Winton has created a vivid landscape for me to visit. I absolutely adored this story and don’t really want to see this book go, but it deserves to be read by many people. To this end I am setting up an international bookray for this book.

Yipee!!! The book is here, in great shape, and I am listening to the Waifs as I type this. I saw them at the Calgary Folk Festival a few years ago. This is a wonderful bit of serendipity! Thank you...

Fascinating book! It is resonating in my thoughts...the lengths we will go to for truth, the power of music...awesome. As soon as I get gaysocialworkers address, I'll send it off. I'm going to include a burned CD of music from Alberta musicians (where I'm from) to continue what Carlynlee started by including a CD of music by Australian musicians (where she is from).
