Journal Entry 1 by BananaForce from Minneapolis, Minnesota USA on Thursday, August 12, 2004
Based on "Eight Years," Joe Klein's critically acclaimed article that first appeared in The New Yorker, this is the first book to deal with both sides of Bill Clinton - the personal flaws and the policy successes. Originally on 4 Audio Cassette Tapes (7.5 hours). Tape 1 needed to be replaced. I could not find one blank tape long enough to hold all of the original contents of tape 1. I thus had to put it on 2 tapes. I have labeled these tapes tape 1 and 1.5.

It's here. I'm looking forward to listening. This sort of book/tape usually isn't too dry for me. And, wow, I'm impressed with the clever way the box was refashioned for these cassettes! BananaForce, You should win some sort of re-cycling award. Anyway . . . I'll journal more after I hear what Joe Klein has to say.

I just finished tape #1.5 and I'm finding it very interesting. The reviews said that Klein describes Clinton as the most talented and compelling politician of his generation and that this account of Clinton's 8 years is fair and balanced. I wasn't prepared for the critical tone. Klein does not hold back his opinions. On to tape #2.

Just finished the last tape. This book seems to focus on the more controversial and juicy aspects of the Clinton years, including the “mysterious” marriage, Newt Gingrich and the government shut-down, Lewinsky of course, the presidential temper, other personality flaws, etc. But it is not gossipy. Although journalistic and not a Clinton bashing book, it is pretty critical. Another title for the book might have been “The Big Disappointment.” In fact, Klein was critical of politics in general and of Clinton’s whole generation. It was an good listen for commuting purposes, and I do recommend it if you are interested in this sort of thing. I did find myself having to rewind a times to be sure I caught what was said. Mailed 5/16 to sundrop via BookRelay.com.
