From the back cover:
"...That summer we bought big straw hats. Maria's had cherries around the rim, Infanta's had forget-me-nots, and mine had poppies as red as fire. When we lay in the hayfield wearing them, the sky, the wildflowers, and the three of us all melted into one..."
Three Summers is the story of three sisters growing up in Greece; their first loves, lies, and secrets; their shared childhood experiences and their gradual growing apart. Maria, the oldest, is strong, sensual, fiercely proud, aloof. Katerina is spirited, independent, off in a dream world of her own. There is also the mysterious Polish grandmother, the wily Captain Andreas, the self-involved Laura Parigori... Katerina tells the story of these intertwined lives with imagination, humor, deep tenderness, and a certain nostalgia. Three Summers is a romance with nature, with our planet. It is the declaration of a young girl in love with life itself.

A few words about the writer:
Born in Athens, Margarita Liberaki lives in Greece and France and writes in Greek and French. After her three novels she also began writing plays.

Translated by Karen Van Dyck.

I had a hard time with this book. I'm not sure what it was. I found I was confused about all the characters at the beginning. The writing is certainly lovely and I did like the descriptions. I'll pass it on as quickly as possible. Thank you for sharing!

I had a little bit of trouble with this one. I don't know if it is because it is a translation or not. Once I finally figured out who everyone was, it got a little easier and I did enjoy it, but I wished that she would have gone more in depth about the Polish grandmother. I will be sending this on as soon as I get the address for the next person. Thanks!

I liked very much the description of the characters, the atmosphere of this book. I found it hard sometimes getting into the book, but other times, I just had to keep reading and I felt like Katerina was a friend.
For me this book reflects rather well the sweet-sour summers when you're entering adulthood, at the end of your college years, when you're just going to start to work. Of course for the three sisters the change if from being "girls" to being courted, and getting married to become women and then mothers.

Thank you very much for introducing me to this greek author, apapsa!

I'm sorry I kept this book so long. I'm mailing it to Margih today!

Thank you! This book arrived today from Finland. It even smells to me like a foreign country. And the snowman bookmark is adorable!

This is second in line to be read after Almost French.

I too was confused at times by this book. I couldn't figure out whether Mrs. Parigori was really infatuated with David, or whether that was Katerina's jealous imagination. Then, although I enjoyed hearing about Andreas, I couldn't figure out whether any of it was real. I thought maybe Mother's secret was that she was in love with Andreas. But I did enjoy the Polish grandmother and would have liked to know more about her.

I have contacted lakelady2282, and when I get her address, this book will make its long journey to Australia.

The book arrived safely today. Thank you rhythmnbiscuit for posting it out. I'm looking forward to reading this. It's actually summer here but it's been raining and hailing, real reading weather.

Journal Entry 20 by lakelady2282 from Lake Macquarie, New South Wales Australia on Tuesday, January 10, 2006
I loved this book! I think it is the most sensual and haunting book I've ever read. The three girls are a little lost, waiting for their lives to begin and in the waiting is the sensuousness. Other readers have found it a bit confusing with all the characters and it can be a little, but, in fact, the writer handles the changes from points of view very deftly. Katerina with the first person "I" point of view will simply fade into the "she" third person veiwpoint of one of the other sisters or other characters in the book. She is a very skilled writer in this and in her beautiful descriptions. I loved the Polish grandmother and some of the traits of the Polish grandmother that Katerina gradually realises are in her too. I would love to read other translated editions of her work, apapsa. Do you know of any?
Thanks so much apapsa and everyone involved. Will pm Neuilly.
