Interesting concept--vampires are real and they exist openly in normal society--with interesting characters. Reasonably interesting read. Third novel of a series with the character of Sookie Stackhouse.

I enjoyed this even more than the first one in the series - more tension, continued character development. This one had me on the edge of my seat at times.

Will pass on to Lisaxiii at the next meet-up. :)

Sookie Stackhouse is your typical small town barmaid in her mid-twenties with a little secret. She reads minds. Oh, and her boyfriend is a vampire. Not so typical. This is the second of the Sookie stories. She is now working for the vampires, who need her to use her gift to get information about other humans. Oddly, I think this story is more about racism than anything else. The cook at her bar is murdered and it appears to be because he is gay. There are law suites to keep people from living in the neighborhood (granted it is because they are vampires). And a very nasty pseudo-religious organization bent on destroying an entire race of people (again vampires). Part mystery and part chick lit. This book was fun.

I will pass this on at our next meetup

2006 Book #2: Southern Vampire (Sookie Stackhouse) 02: Living Dead In Dallas by Charlaine Harris

I just got this book in the mail on Wednesday, but since the book had been stuck for a while and it's so short I decided to read it and mail it by Saturday morning. I just managed to do it!

It was fairly easy to do considering that I found this book so enjoyable. I'd just finished reading the first book of this series a few weeks ago, so it was good timing to get this one. So far I'm really liking this series. I'm a follower of a couple of different "vampires live among us and it's normal" series, but I have to say that so far I'm liking this one best. I got into the genre with Laurell K. Hamilton, but at some point her series went unenjoyable for me.

The other two series I've been reading are the Women of the Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong and the witch series by Kim Harrison. I find those two series confusing as far as they are so similar (to me) that I have a hard time telling them apart. I would say that the Sookie Stackhouse series reminds me most of the Hamilton series back when it first started. Back when it still involved some non-supernatural detective work and not so much angst about whose bed(s) Anita Blake was going to land in.

I really like the Sookie character. She seems very normal, average girl next door. Her wit and intelligence are great and every once in a while when the character busts out with thinking in her head something like how she's imagining a vampire dragging a bull through the woods she really cracks me up. I think it's because of her naivete that makes it slightly funnier. The ending with the backstory on Bill was a very good touch in my opinion. It was well done and I have to say that other series could certainly do better with this type of touching character history.

However, I do have to agree with the previous person (people?) who said that the story about the cook's murder seemed a little extra, like something with which to pad out the book. I think it would've done better to either stick with either just that storyline or just the one in Dallas and not do both in one book. Not that I didn't like either. I think both stories were written just fine, but I think the book could've used more focus. Otherwise I really liked the book and look forward to getting my hands on book 3.

I contacted nightraine56 as soon as I got this book and received the address in time to get the book out to nightraine56 before the post office closed today, Saturday!

As a complete sidenote, without it being planned, I noticed when I first logged the book that it had once been in the hands of my LJ buddy herebedragons. Small world. :)

So anyway, this book is on its way and should be received within the week. Thanks for the opportunity!

Finished this up last night and will be on its way to terra57. I liked the first book better, but this was good for the most part. Sookie got on my nerves once in awhile with her goofiness, but that's the character. It just seemed more prevailant this time. I did like Eric. He seemed real naughty in a sexy, vampire way, but Sookie is good to stay with Bill. He's kind of moody and that seems to go well with her. Thanks for offering it up I am glad to have read it. Will try to read the next installment at some point.

Well I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end. Must have to have read it in 24 hours. Anywho, Sookie was better defined in this book and the addition of several characters made it quite interesting. I like the way the book has taken on more flavor.
I will be sending this out on Wednesday Feb 1 to the next person in line. Thanks for the great read.

Friday was a horrible day until I got home from work and found this waiting for me! I stayed up way too late Friday and Saturday to finish, but I loved the continuing adventures of Sookie.
I like the world Charlaine Harris has set up - vampires are recognized but many people are still uncomfortable with their presence. I am most impressed with her descriptions of companies that have sprung up to offer services that are uniquely suited to vampire needs. Hotels with daytime security, an airline that transports the coffins, etc.

Really nice read!
The only thing that was a little bit off was the solving of Lafayette's murder, because it seems the author has forgotten all about it duriong the main part of the novel.
Passed it on to a colleague.
