The Barnes & Noble Review
In the vein of blockbuster supernatural thrillers like Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake sequence and Charlaine Harris's Southern Vampire saga comes Kim Harrison's debut novel, Dead Witch Walking, about a sexy witch and bounty hunter who will do anything to bring criminals to justice.
Set in and around an alternate Cincinnati where Inderlanders (witches, vampires, werewolves, faeries, etc.) have officially been recognized, the novel begins with Harrison's leather-loving hero, Rachel Morgan, quitting her job as a runner (a kind of supernatural bounty hunter) for Inderland Security. The only problem is that no one walks away from Inderland Security -- and lives. Her boss, an ill-tempered ghoul named Denon, immediately puts out a contract on her, and within a matter of hours, her life is officially forfeit. She finds herself evicted from her apartment and almost assassinated on a city bus.

Thank God for friends. With the help of Ivy Tamwood, a non-practicing vampire, and Jenks, a temperamental pixie, Rachel tries to begin a new life by starting an independent investigation service based in an old church in an area called the Hollows. But first she must survive the week! While Dead Witch Walking doesn't have the overt sexuality of an Anita Blake novel or the clever sense of humor of a Sookie Stackhouse tale, Kim Harrison's new saga -- powered by her intelligently crafted characters and tightly knit plotlines -- will undoubtedly find a place of its own in this burgeoning hybrid genre that blurs the lines between fantasy, mystery, horror, and romance. I just finished it and it is an interesting read - it definetely fits this urban faery detective subgenre. I thought the novel had perhaps a few flaws, but since it is a first novel it is understandable ( some info-dumps for example) and will probably be solved in later books and are balanced by some interesting ideas on the universe and secondary characters. I say later books because the book is very much set up for sequels, open ending, and with some serious hints about a secondary character ( Nick) not being quite what he claims. In all pretty interesting, though I am not sure I would rush out to read its sequels even if they were already out. Thanks BrynnSC.

PS - book shipped to Candy80 in Finland October 11th.

I liked the book, even though it wasn't exactly what I was expecting. (That's what you get when you don't read a single review before signing up for a ring...) I loved the characters, although I wish I would have gotten to know them better. But I guess we'll have to read the sequels to find out their secrets. The book felt very much like the beginning of something bigger, and I think the story will get much more interesting later on. For example, what was the deal with Kisten? I don't think that author would have introduced him in this book, unless he were to have a pivotal role in the upcoming books. (Which is good, he was sexy. *grin*) I was also hoping for some hot lesbian action, but in the end there wasn't any. But I'm not giving up hope yet... The sequel, The Good, The Bad, and The Undead will be out February 1, 2005.

I sent the book today to gypsyrose02 in Australia. It should take about a week or two with airmail.

Check out the author's website!

Great and fast read! I was worried I wouldn't like it, because I'm not a big fan of the detective/police procedural stories, but I was hooked from the first chapter. There were some unresolved questions, but I'm guessing the author will answer them in future books (which I can't wait to read, incidentally). Like, what did Ivy spend her wish on? Any guesses? I hope that there's more Ivy in the next book (she's my favorite character) and maybe a little more romance between Rachel and Ivy. Thanks for sharing. I'll send it on when I get an address.

UPDATE: I still haven't gotten an address for Sheria as of 5/25/05. I'm sending another PM, and if I don't hear from her by the end of the week I'll try the next person on the list.

It's here :) I'm about halfway through my current book, so I'll be able to start this shortly.

This was an entertaining book, with interesting characters and plot twists, but I felt like a lot was left hanging. I didn't feel like I had enough information about some things that happened (and too much about others!). I felt the same way about some of the characters - I didn't know enough about them to understand their motivations. There were a lot of holes left unplugged and questions left unanswered while the main story line wrapped itself up.

Still, it was a fun book and I while I won't rush out to purchase more in the series, I won't pass up a chance to read them either (and maybe get some of those questions answered).

Thanks for sharing this BrynnSC. I'll send it on to the next participant this week.

I received this in the mail today. I look forward to reading it, based on everything said here and what all the JE's of another copy of the book that I received to put in Kislany's m-bag. That book was well traveled and many people had much to say about the book -

I will get this read ASAP and back to BrynnSC
