Sue Grafton... I've heard so often now that she writes great stories that I couldn't resist to take this book with me.

What begins as a random phone call from a "storage space scavenger" leads Kinsey to a box of old papers and personal effects that her ex-husband, Mickey Magruder, left behind. Inside, she finds a 15-year-old unsent letter from a bartender that, among other things, reveals her former hubby was having an affair. The letter also contains details about the murder of a transient--a crime for which Mickey was blamed. Although never convicted, Mickey was ruined--losing his job, wife, and friends. But 15 years later, Kinsey realizes that foul play may have been involved in the murder, a deadly temptation for her.

I wanted to read the alphabet murders in the right order. But then it would have taken years and years till I would have reached "O". So I read this book now for the Challenge "Von-hinten-nach-vorne". It is another nice book of Sue Grafton, very personnel this time. I enjoyed it.

Read out of order, because that would take too long.

This time, we learn about Kinsey's first ex-husband, as she grapples with questions of her own guilt, when her perspective on an old crime shifts because of an undelivered letter from the past.

It's a funny touch that the author explains in a note that because the series progresses chronologically, but slowly, Kinsey is in a time bubble in the mid-80s and therefore without cell phones or the internet.

Also nice: Kinsey mentions that she has other ongoing cases in various stages of progress - research, waiting for answers to inquiries, writing bills, reminding people to pay the bills - and that most cases are boring legwork, that she is very rarly shot at, but only writes down the exciting cases for her own interest.

Will travel on to Heidelberg.

The story hasn't convinced me. It was a too slow exploration of the facts.
