RELEASE NOTES:
Brought to the meet-up.
Ts, ts, jetzt habe ich immer noch kein einziges Sue Grafton Buch gelesen, fange aber schon fleißig an, Bücher aus der Serie zu sammeln, weil sie mir so heiß empfohlen wurden...
Lorna Kepler, young an beautiful, was found dead in her flat. Her mother asks Kinsey Millhone to find her murderer because she feels sure her daughter was murdered. During her investigation lots of surprising things are found out by Millhone.
A story full of suspense, but with an unsatisfying end (for me).

Kinsey Millhone is hired by a grieving mother to look into the death of her daughter, Lorna Kepler. Living alone, she was found two weeks after her death, so that decomposition made cause of death unknown. It's unclear whether it was even murder or natural death, and the police investigation didn't have enough clues for definite answer. But the mother wants closure. When Kinsey starts investigating, she quickly learns that Lorna was a night-person, out and about during the night, and also a high-class hooker earning good money. As Kinsey alters her own schedule from getting up early at 6am and to sleep at 9pm, to staying awake the whole night and sleeping past noon, the caffeine and change in rhythm feels weird.
Finally, she finds the person responsible, and makes an important decision out of emotion. The consequences are interesting and should be long-reaching in the next books, as she's crossed a line.
Unlike the other Kinsey books I (re-) read recently, this time the killer and Kinsey don't get a big finale show-down with confessions and explanation of the method. Actually, the evidence Kinsey uses is quite thin. Like many crime novels, not only from this author, once you know the murderer and method and re-read, the motive seems often a bit thin (dumb). True, in real life, people do kill in dumb ways and for dumb motives; but in the fictional world, the murderers are often presented as smarter/ different up until the final reveal.
However, most of the fun of a detective novel is watching the detective finding out things. The Kinsey series is good in that regard because while she interviews person after person, A connected to B who's a neighbour to C, who works for D, etc., we get glimpses into many different people's lives. In this book, for example, Kinsey deals with a prostitute (and a very special male porn star!), avoiding all the dumb Hollywood cliches. The matter-of-fact tone in which Kinsey narrates a lot of what she observes, with little judgement of her own, is on the one hand probably unusual considering the usual american morals (though Kinsey was raised differently by her aunt), but on the other hand for that reason refreshing. The author describes a P.I. and a hooker discussing money issues, or rather, the hooker giving investment advice, and makes it sound believable. The later bonding scene establishes nicely and sweetly the believable personal involvement of Kinsey that suddenly alters her attitude causing an emotional angry decision at the end.
RESERVED both because the book needs some glue and because it wants to travel to the next wishlist.
