Journal Entry 1 by swan-scot from Inverness, Scotland United Kingdom on Tuesday, August 06, 2002
Recent purchase from charity shop. Will take on holiday to read and release. October 2002: This book was a suprise find. It is a powerful, evocative story which concentrates on the emotional turmoil of a close-knit group of friends and lovers in Scotland (and beyond). The book tells of the effects of physical closeness and distance on the bonds between men and women, all the time set against a background of the Scottish outdoors and the political scene. The main characters' love for climbing (Jimmy and Graeme) and the artistic highs and lows of Kim are central parts of the story. This group of four, and several more minor characters have a bittersweet web of relationships which come and go. The characterisations are complex; the dialogue comes alive through the author's sparing use of Scots dialect. I hope others will enjoy it as much as I. I changed my mind about releasing it in Canada - the Scots dialect is pretty strong in places and may be lost on 'non-natives'. I plan to leave it somewhere climbers/hillwalkers will find it ~ in a mountain bothy perhaps.

Journal Entry 2 by swan-scot at on Wednesday, April 16, 2003

Released on Wednesday, April 16, 2003 at Inshriach Bothy, in Aviemore, Highlands Scotland. It's not really in Aviemore, but it's the nearest place of any size to the bothy. The bothy is on the track between Loch an Eilean and Feshie Bridge. I left this book just prior to the Easter bank Holiday weekend ~ hopefully the bothy may see some visitors over the next few days. When I passed by it was a day of glorious sunshine - with a temperature of about 24C - unheard of for Scotland for April! By the time I arrived here, I was positively melting. I came by way of the Gaick Pass - north of Blair Atholl to Kincraig, then Feshie Bridge to here, Loch an Eilean, Columbridge and onto Aviemore. A superb day's off-road cycling. Part of my Books in Bothies Project ~ see my bookshelf

Journal Entry 3 by RedStart from London , Greater London United Kingdom on Monday, April 28, 2003
It was a beautiful hot day on April the 17th when I found this book in Inshriach bothy, a couple of miles south of Loch an Eilean and the town of Aviemore in the Highlands of Scotland. I was on a two-week holiday hiking, skiing, biking, swimming and bird-watching with six members of my family and never expected to make this very welcome find in the bothy. My cycle ride ended badly that day as my chain broke in the woods five miles from home and I got bitten repeatedly whilst trying to fix the damn thing, but I'm looking forward to reading this novel as soon as I have finished 'Heroes' by John Pilger. I'm not too sure if Swan-Scot would approve of my plan, but I want to take 'Electric Brae' out of these isles altogether and leave it in sunny Madrid in May, where I am going on holiday with my partner. What could be further removed than the wild countryside described in the book than a sunny, modern, cosmopolitan city in the Iberian peninsula? I hope that it will encourage others to appreciate the beautiful area I have come to regard as my second home.
