book description from amazon.com
Discworld's pesky alchemists are up to their old tricks again. This time, they've discovered how to get gold from silver -- the silver screen that is. Hearing the siren call of Holy Wood is one Victor Tugelbend, a would-be wizard turned extra. He can't sing, he can't dance, but he can handle a sword (sort of), and now he wants to be a star. So does Theda Withel, an ambitious ingénue from a little town (where else?) you've probably never heard of.

But the click click of moving pictures isn't just stirring up dreams inside Discworld. Holy Wood's magic is drifting out into the boundaries of the universes, where raw realities, the could-have-beens, the might-bes, the never-weres, the wild ideas are beginning to ferment into a really stinky brew. It's up to Victor and Gaspode the Wonder Dog (a star if ever one was born!) to rein in the chaos and bring order back to a starstruck Discworld. And they're definitely not ready for their close-up!

Five minutes ago I took the book out of the mailbox. Thank you Earthdance for sending it out. I've got another bookring here with me. As soon as I've finished that one (Saturday at the latest), I'll start this one.

Mhm...over the past week I tried several times to get into the novel. Don't misunderstand me: it's very entertaining; but at the moment I'm not in the mood for the novel. While reading I'm higly amused by it but I can't be persuaded to stick to it for long. As I've only managed to read 80 pages so far, I'd better send it on, so that the others can enjoy it properly.

As soon as I get Nuela's address, I'll send it on its way.

Journal Entry 5 by elhamisabel from Frankfurt am Main, Hessen Germany on Thursday, September 30, 2004
I will send the book to Nuela tomorrow. I forgot it at home this morning, or otherwise it would be on its way to Nuela today.

Journal Entry 9 by MollyGrue from Tacoma, Washington USA on Saturday, December 18, 2004
Got this earlier today. The envelope was open, so if there was anything traveling with this book (bookmarks, list of people who are on the ring, etc) it's not traveling with it any longer. Thanks for sharing!

Journal Entry 10 by MollyGrue from Tacoma, Washington USA on Thursday, December 23, 2004
An average Discworld novel...has some good jokes in it, but not the laugh-fest that I was hoping for.

Thanks for sharing!

Several notes to report on this book:
1. Oldreader asked to be skipped and dropped from this ray because he/she has too many other TBRs and other books going right now.
2. I've already told Earthdance about this, but I'll confess to it in the journal, too. My cat has struck again and managed to spill a glass of fruit juice on the same table that the book was sitting on. No major damage, just a few pinkish stains on some pages and none of the writing is blurred or obscured. So if anyone after me on this ray is curious about the mysterious pink stain, mystery solved, and apologies given....sorry!
3. Now to my opinion of the book. I enjoyed it and got quite a few laughs as I do with most Pratchett books. It was a great satire of the entity known as Hollywood (Holy Wood). I didn't like this one as much as his books that focus more on continuing characters like the witches or Rincewind, but it was still a good read, even though it took me longer to get through it than usual.
Sending it on to BelleMorte sometime this week.

Thanks Bellemorte!

Journal Entry 16 by BelleMorte from Tuscaloosa, Alabama USA on Monday, February 28, 2005
well, this was deff an enjoyable book but almost certainly not my favorite of Pratchett's. It was humorous only in places as opposed to the almost non-stop hilarity of his other discworld novels. Glad to have read it though! I will be sending this along this week to the next person!!

Bit of a slow start to this one, but definitely did improve as it went along. Appreciated many of the film references, but probably missed a good number too (not a film buff!). I liked the references to reality, and what constitutes it. Overall I'd say it was OK, but not his best.
Sending on as soon as I get details.

Journal Entry 20 by daynoir from Cardiff, Wales United Kingdom on Saturday, April 23, 2005
Caught this one on Tuesday, just before heading up to Brisbane for work (planes are so much more comfortable than buses!). Have just finished it (ahh, weekends..) and I quite enjoyed this one. Possibly because the main character, Victor, reminds me of one of my good friends (when I met him, he was dressed as an "Errol Flynn" pirate - complete with pencil thin moustache and suave demeanour).

O, and I'm happy to send it on to bookmanu...

Journal Entry 21 by daynoir from Cardiff, Wales United Kingdom on Monday, May 2, 2005
due to post offices not being open on the weekend (what crazy city is this?), and ANZAC day, the book was posted during the week (can't remember exactly). The post office people said it would take about 10 working days...

Journal Entry 22 by bookmanu from Cascais, Lisboa (distrito) Portugal on Monday, May 16, 2005
Just in from Down Under!

Thanks Earthdance for adding me to the bookray and daynoir for mailing it! It was in my post box when I got home tonight.

Looking forward to reading it...Coincidentally I'm about to read another of Earthdance's Terry Pratchett bookring's - The Last Continent, which, and I quote: 'is not a book about Australia. No, it's about somewhere entirely different which just happens to be,here and there, a bit...australian. Still...no worries, right?'
