One of those classics I never read but have always meant to. I think I'll keep it in my tbr pile unless someone requests it before I get to it...

A NOTE to Jessibud: .
..Finding this book and reading your comments was a truly karmic experience! Buying something for my water pipes was EXACTLY what I was doing last night at Home Depot! ..My kitchen pipes almost froze solid on Dec. 20th - had no kitchen water for 2 days,. Had a Xmas party anyway, with some buckets of water brought up from the basement taps. Figured it was time to get organized for the NEXT cold snap.....
Have read everything John Steinbeck ever wrote - including war journals and this book.
It is sad that reading good literature is going the way of the typewriter.......everyone out there should read at least one of this man's books. The Red Pony and Of Mice and Men are good ones to start with, if East of Eden and Grapes of Wrath look daunting.....
(PS: Gary Sinese and John Malkovich did a great job in a movie version of Mice and Men a few years ago.)
As for The WInter of Our Discontent, it was the first Steinbeck book I read - a first edition hardcover of my Mom's. I was 20 and home from school for the holidays - a sobering book for a 20 year old - and the style..... so plain and beautiful. How does he do that?
This has been a fun experience. Yours truly,

Picked this up at the Toronto meetup. I love John Steinbeck (as you might notice from the multiple copies of his books on my bookshelf ;) ) and I've been searching for this one in the used bookstores with no luck. How lucky I was to come across this at the meetup! Can't wait to read it!
PS I loved reading the previous release notes - what a creative themed release.. :)

Picked up at the April meetup at the Yellow Griffin Pub.
I went through a "Steinbeck phase" many, many years ago (could it really be 20 years ago?!?!), but somehow missed this book. Added to Mt. TBR.

Hehe...what goes around comes around, as they say. Look what I found at our meetup at the Yellow Griffin Pub today! Maybe this is a sign. Maybe I should really read it, finally... the snow is swirling around outside as I type. Enough winter, already!
;-)
;-)
Well....Jessibud, HAVE you read it yet?
Ummm..... no, not yet. But you know, I think I will make this my NEXT book!
:-)
:-)
'Making a new JE in honour of my 10th Bookcrossing anniversary on Jan. 10th, 2005. This is the book that started it all. Karmically….the weather is EXACTLY the same as it was when I found the book. Toronto was in a deep freeze - temps down to minus 20C, Jan. 2005. I don't have that crazy kitchen anymore…since moving out here. The person who bought my house dealt with it by ripping it out! It really needed it. A former sun porch, with 0 insulation and only a cinderblock foundation (no insulation there either) underneath. I could leave orange juice and milk on the floor inside the back door, and they would be REALLY cold the next day. One time, there was a 1/2" of ICE in the OJ - in that crazy kitchen.
PS: Jessibud….time to read this book, LOL!
Ok, ok, I can take a hint! As soon as I finish the book I am currently reading -- hopefully by this weekend -- this one will be next!
:-)
:-)
Oh, the shame...
Bookgirrl, knowing what this particular book means to you, especially, but not least because it was what brought you to Bookcrossing, I am almost afraid to write the next words. But, if I am to be honest, I just cannot get into this book. It's been 4 days of trying and I still can't make it to the end of the first chapter. Ok, I am reading in bed at night but it's putting me to sleep rather than keeping me up! I did read Grapes of Wrath in high school and enjoyed that one but for some reason, despite the current weather outside being an inspiration (winter of discontent, etc), it just isn't working for me.
Bookgirrl, please don't disown me.....

THAT was hilarious! Well…I will still be your friend, even if you didn't finish a MASTERPIECE! We are even actually - I had trouble getting into the bird book "Why Don't Woodpeckers Get Headaches" - BTW….I have the book here! 'Just found it in a huge pile. Will bring to next meetup.
Oh. My. I hope poor Steinbeck isn't turning over in his grave at the thought of being compared to a woodpecker....now, I did find that book (the O'Connor one) a fun and hilarious read but even I don't think it belongs in the MASTERPIECE category. ;-)
The joys of reading...it's what makes the world go round!

Journal Entry 17 by Bucklesbook at Mount Pleasant and Soudan in Toronto, Ontario Canada on Wednesday, May 6, 2015
Released 8 yrs ago (5/6/2015 UTC) at Mount Pleasant and Soudan in Toronto, Ontario Canada
WILD RELEASE NOTES:
This book was originally registered and released by Jessibud in Augustr 2004. I cannot find any release notes. Ifound the book quite depressing and frankly, very confusing because of all the characters who ran in and out of the story. Steinbeck's earlier novels wee easier and more gripping. Perhaps like me, he was"getting on"
LOL, Bucklesbook: The first time I read this book, it was YOUR hardcopy, from the bookshelves of our house on Nesbitt Drive. I was 20 - home for Xmas from college and needed something to read. I thought it was well written, but yes…sad. You didn't like it back then, and you still don't like it 40 years later. That's OK. We can all be as honest as we like about books on this site! But, I stand firm: IMHO, one of Steinbeck's masterpieces. There are 3 outstanding "Johns" in modern American literature: Cheever, Updike & Steinbeck. They are all depressing at times, as they examine modern American life.
