This is the first novel written by the author of Bel Canto. It's a very different story, written from three different perspectives. When Rose arrives at St. Elizabeth's in the late 1960s she plans to give her baby-to-be up for adoption. Instead she stays, marries, and keeps the baby. But life isn't easy for Rose or those who love her but never really know her. It's rather a sad story of a lost soul searching for herself.
