6 out of 10

I have to confess that despite this book being literary and award-winning, I really didn't like it very much. Maybe it's because I'm vegetarian and ichthyophobic (completely insane, I know, but I have an irrational fear of fish) so the whole castaway thing was just a bit too much for me.
Also, I don't think it is a "story that will make you believe in God" (viii).

On a more positive note...
I loved chapter 92, the "exceptional bontanical discovery" (284), but I don't want to say too much about it fo fear of spoiling it for someone who reads the journal entries before the book.
I also liked the character of Pi, particularly early in the book. I enjoyed the awakening of his poly-religious tendencies and how they affected the people around him.
I also really love the cover art (illustration by Jamie Bennett and design by Paul Hodgson / pHd). I think this Canadian edition is much compelling at first glance that the American one I've see around.

Anyway, I'm mailing it off to LyekkaMarengo tomorrow. I'm interested to hear what she thinks of it.

An image of the Pondicherry Botanical Garden (which is, of course, a real place) from a tourism website. I have a friend that lives in Chennai (Madras). I'm going to ask him to take a photo next time he goes to Pondicherry so I can replace the image with one of my own.

This book is on so many peoples "best book I ever read lists" and on an equal number of people's "worst thing I ever tried to read" lists I figured it was time I gave it a try myself. This is from the "hot book for a donation" on bookrelay and since I went ahead and donated before I saw this relay I thought it was a great time to get the book and get someone else to donate also. Worked too, I'm sending out "My Sister's Keeper" to chambejd.

Thanks for the book and bookrelay rocks!
