Connie Willis is a great writer. She truly shines in the novel, but her short stories are pretty good. This one's a great one for reading on the bus or for a few minutes before bed.

At least one of the stories ("Fire Watch") is set in the timetraveling universe of _To Say Nothing of the Dog_; fans of that [dis-]continuum will probably want to read this novel.
