I can see how this play altered the cncept of what you could portray on stage. First performed in 1889, naturalistic, people could have their backs to the stage and could be doing ordinary things and not talking--must have been quite revolutionary! And the characters had different ways of looking at things. I don't want to tell too much, but it is a strange play and sometimes I found myself royally pissed off at characters. I had to keep in mind the times in which it was written--enough said. Judge for yourself--:)

Hmmm. This was an interesting little play. I can't say that I really liked any of the three characters, but if I had to choose one -- it would be the poor cook named Christine. Just like you Rita, I found myself getting royally pissed off at the characters at times too. It seemed like Julie and Jean loved to play mind games with themselves and each other. And of course, class and gender were huge issues that they kept tossing back and forth to each other. It was interresting to see the shift in power that was caused by social issues concerning class and gender throughout this play's pages. Pretty shocking stuff for that time period--hmmm?
