To be read. It looks sad, so it keeps getting put further down the pile... but I will get there. Sending to EDDI when done.

Journal Entry 2 by Fleebo from Sydney, New South Wales Australia on Thursday, October 07, 2004
A very worthy book, and all too convincing. It's the story of two boys growing up in Afghanistan - the son of the master, and the son of the servant. When the Russians invade, the rich boy escapes to America, leaving the other behind. Full of guilt, he returns many years later, while the country is in the grip of the Taliban. It's hard for us to even imagine that Afghanistan has not really had peace for about 30 years now. There are adults there, with families, who don't remember life before the constant gunfire and shelling, the constant fear of death. According to journalist John Pilger (for whom I have the utmost respect), since America invaded, Afghani everyday life is now more hazardous than it ever was. Food for thought.

Sending to EDDI today as part of a trade. I think that hoping that you `enjoy' the book may be inappropriate, so I'll just hope that it affects you in a good way. October 2006 - wow, this has travelled! Best two bucks I ever spent. Cheers everyone!

Journal Entry 5 by EDDI from Melbourne, Victoria Australia on Wednesday, November 03, 2004
I thought this book was outstanding, beautiful in parts and disturbing in others. The personal stories of the various characters and the vivid backdrop of life in Afghanistan were brilliantly depicted. I have to admit I cried, which I rarely, if ever, do when reading fiction. While the last part was somewhat predictable, I did not feel this detracted from the strength and beauty of the book. Thanks fleebo for sharing this wonderful read.

Journal Entry 10 by bookfairy65 from Yass, New South Wales Australia on Sunday, April 03, 2005
It took me a couple of days to pick this book up, but once I did I couldn't put it down. It is a real page-turner. It is one of the best books I've read in a while, and like EDDI, it had me in tears in places. Thankyou to all who have held this book before me and passed it on, allowing me to read it. I will be sending this out to hillcat as soon as I receive postal details.

Journal Entry 13 by hillcat from Melbourne, Victoria Australia on Sunday, April 17, 2005
I quite enjoyed this book although it was a little bit predictable in places. I too was moved to tears several times. As Fleebo pointed out there are people living in Afghanistan who have never known peace which for us is quite hard to grasp. This book shows how difficult it is for different tribes to get along and how some look down upon others as automatically inferior. A book in a similar vein... the Sewing Circles of Herat; A Personal Voyage through Afghanistan by Christina Lamb (non-fiction). The descriptions of areas in Afghanistan before and after the fighting are truly heartbreaking. [I have a copy but don't think it is registered on my bookshelf . Please PM if you would like to read that]. Posting to tantan tomorrow although I was told to take my time with reading the book!

I really enjoyed this, and was a great glimpse into life in Afghanistan. A little predictable at times, as somebody else mentioned, but it has encouraged me to look out some more factual information on life in Afghanistan. Heading off to miss-gonewest next.

Journal Entry 16 by miss-gonewest from Perth, Western Australia Australia on Sunday, September 25, 2005
I am so sorry that I haven't journalled this book earlier... there was a mixup at the post office; the book was then found; when it went on a lovely holiday to Austria with me. Unfortunately time got away from me and net access was limited, so I wasn't able to journal it. (But it is safe and sound and ready for more travels!) I really loved the story.... once I got into the book, I found I couldn't put it down. I experienced a great range of emotion, and as others have said, it has made me want to read more about Afghanistan. And I too found myself getting teary and sad in parts (I won't give them away). I hope that Hosseini writes more novels as I would enjoy reading them very much, I'm sure. I will send a PM to Boreal now so that I can get this book back on its way to other readers. Thanks so much to EDDI for starting this ring, and my apologies for not giving an update earlier.

Journal Entry 19 by boreal from Dunedin, Otago New Zealand on Friday, October 28, 2005
I found this book improved the more of it I read,so by the time I was half way through it was unputdownable. I found it moving and well written and it was wonderful learning a bit more about Afghanistan, even if what you learnt was disturbing. Like others have said it was a bit predictable but the ending was lovely. My husband has expressed an interest in reading it too -hope that's okay.

Journal Entry 22 by Alectoness from Wimbledon, Greater London United Kingdom on Saturday, March 11, 2006
Thanks for sending this book to me, boreal. It's a wonderful 'escape' book, which let me withdraw from the stress of wedding dress shopping and enter Amir's world in Afganistan and America. While, at times I found the plot details a bit too contrived and the foreshadowing a bit too much, I really enjoyed reading this novel, with its details of life in Afganistan and of the relationship between Amir and his father. Very easy to read, and very difficult to put down - thanks again, boreal and to Fleebo for originally registering this book! I'll be taking it along to the Wellington Bookcrossing meetup on Wednesday night, and hopefully it will find a new home there.
