A novel about a literary club for women in a small Ohio college town that is formed shortly after the Civil War. The novel continues until the Great Depression and is all about the different members of the club over the years. It is written by a history professor who makes these old-fashioned times seem real and beautiful.

Recieved from tabby-cat-owner in trade for Leading the Cheers but also associated with the Numbers Release Challenge.

This looks great - a nice big thick book which I'll probably read over Christmas. I'll then send it out on a BookRing before it goes into the Permanent Collection.

Thank you again tabby-cat-owner!

Finally finished reading this lovely book last night (I had to read it around a whole bunch of Rings that came in just as I was starting it). I loved it - so vivid and the characters so real, sustained right up to the end (though a family tree on the back page wouldn't have gone amiss!). That perfect thing, a good meaty family saga but well written and intelligent and interesting. The background was good too and has encouraged me to borrow a book on the Civil War and after from an American friend of mine!

I cried and cried at the end. I mean, I knew that would happen, as we followed two of the founder members from the beginning of the book - but you feel like you know these people. I also loved Ludwig Rausch, the benevolent mill-owner who keeps his business going to support his employees.

A wonderful book which I can't get in the UK - I'm therefore going to offer it out on a BookRing when more of my current crop have come back to me but it will then be going into the PC (hope that's OK tabby-cat-owner, I did mention that back when I received it)

Thanks again for the chance to read this excellent book. I have already earmarked it for a holiday re-read in years to come - like "A Suitable Boy" it would save me having to take along too many separate books!

Well, real life has really got in the way over the last month so I'm having to be sensible and pass on some of the rings that have accumulated here. Unfortunately, this one is already overdue, so is moving on. It's just too big!

Sorry, and thanks...

Journal Entry 9 by AnglersRest from Teignmouth, Devon United Kingdom on Friday, June 17, 2005
Thanks winterson, the book arrived today, what a whopper! This is the fourth ring that I have, as it is the biggest and there is no one after me, I have decided to read this last, but will get to it asap.

Well, I made it. What a great read, a long haul, but I finished it earlier today.

I found the book slightly slow to start with, but within about 100 pages, I was into the characters, although I struggled slightly to keep up with who everyone was. I agree with you LyzzyBee, a family tree would have been useful.

Thanks LyzzyBee for sharing this one, its a favourite for my 2005 reads!.

Off in the post back to you on Monday 25th.

Journal Entry 11 by LyzzyBee from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Wednesday, July 27, 2005

Winterson - let me know when you would like another go with this.

This one is going into the Permanent Collection but is always available for Ring or Loan.

Wow. I got a large parcel in the post today from America. It was an unregistered copy of this book, for my very own, from the lovely Labmomnm. She had seen that I'd put it in the Permanent Collection pending finding my own copy, realised like me that I'd never find a copy in the UK, and sent me hers. How lovely!

I had just been feeling a bit guilty about keeping this for so long (esp after a discussion on the UK BCers about PC books) so this was wonderful timing too.

I immediately thought of my friend Linda, and her Mum, for this book, checked wtih Linda and will be passing it on to her in the next week.

What a wonderful story of BookCrossing kindness and friendship!

Golly. This book has taken some time to read but it's been worth it! I'll gather some thoughts and write a proper review later :-)

Journal Entry 16 by LindyB28 from Acocks Green, West Midlands United Kingdom on Friday, March 23, 2007
This book is classic. It reminds me in parts of Gone With The Wind but without the romantic melodrama of that book. Romance, in fact, takes second place to the theme of simply living. We grow with two young school girls from their high school graduation in 1868 through the fin de siecle to the upheavals of the 1930s. Much like George Eliot's Middlemarch, this novel uses the development of one small community in historical time to map those social changes that are taught *as history* onto a personal human scale. Hooven Santmyer's characters are vividly and sympathetically drawn. Even those disliked by those around them are shown by the novelist in the richness of their humanity, with portrayal of the goodness within them that may be obscured to their neighbours. The eponymous club places 'ladies' at the novel's heart: the members of Waynesboro Women's Club meet fortnightly. But the book is about much more than these meetings. It's about life, about being human.
