9 out of 10

This is an excellent read. It is the story of commerce, intrigue and betrayal set among the Portguguese Jewish community of Amersterdam in 1659. While weaving a wonderful story, it describes the workings of merchantile exchanges.

8 out of 10

This was an excellent book. I won't say too much because it's probably the twists and turns of the plot of this book that make it a really interesting read. Lots of intrigue that make for an interesting ending.

I mailed this out to jamesmum today. Thanks, Amusedbythis, for sharing and for your patience with me!

8 out of 10

Shoot - this arrived while I was away on vacation, and I'm just now starting it. I will get through it promptly, and will mail it on to the next participant soon (anyone have an m-bag to to Aussieland?)

1/24/05: Loving it so far!

I really quite enjoyed this book, and its insight into a community that I scarcely knew existed. The characters were believable, and the story was well-told. I am now on the lookout for other books by this author.

3/6/05: Oops - forgot to update my journal entry for this. It is in an m-bag on its way to TanTan.

9 out of 10

Really enjoyed this! It captured my interest right from the start, and the abundance of characters were handled so well that I didn't find it hard to follow. Although the ins and outs of the trading was mind-boggling!
