Amazonian Penguin Book of New Womens Travel Writing [Bookray]
9 journalers for this copy...
"Travel writing is on the move... Prepare for a bumpy ride as Amazonian breaks down old conventions and ventures into new territory with this bold, innovative collection of previously unpublished essays from women across the world."
A good read, especially if you're on the road yourself or on holiday somewhere.
Will try to send it out as a bookray if enough people are interested.
It would be great to send the book through all countries about which the stories were written: England, Ghana, Pakistan, USA, Canada, Bosnia, Spain, Cambodia, Bangladesh.
Okay, as I can't seem to interest more people for this ray I'll get it on the road. This is the order of participants (so far!):
1. Lys-is-trata (Germany)
2. juvi (Germany)
3. RikkiDD (Germany)
4. naftali (Germany) <-- wants to be left out
5. Brujula (France)
6. billhookbabe (UK)
7. AnnaLibrarian (USA)
8. minniemack (USA)
9. Mamikaem (USA)
The last participant of the ray can either find further readers for the book, release it in the wild or add it to her/his permanent collection.
Will be passed on to Lys-is-trata on Sunday.
Got this book yesterday from Dschinny, nice cover picture ;-). It sounds interesting and will be started within a few days.
Although I am very fond of travelling and did quite a lot so far, I could find no access to most of the stories. Will forward the book to juvi today.
Received yesterday. No 3 in Mount TBR.
I liked most of the stories but I was a little disappointed by Shena Mackay who claims to be defending women's rights but at the end suggests that women with "pale sausage legs" should not wear short skirts.
Sorry for keeping this book for such a long time. It won't happen again.

edit 06zh April 2005
With most of the stories I had the problem of getting into them. Others where quite good.
Maybe I met the book and the wrong time.
Nevertheless, for the others, enjoy reading it.

Finally the book is onits way again. This time to Brujula
Received today.
Thank you dschinny and RickiDD!
I read this book while I was on vacation in Roscoff. I liked some of the stories, but some others were disappointing.
I mailed the book to billhookbabe on june 17th.
It's arrived, one bookring before so I should finish in the next few weeks.
Sorry I took so long with this book. One of the things that I found appealing about this book was how it related to me. The need to travel, to get away, be alone by some authors. The surprise and realisation of things they didn't know, want to know or realise by others. Some of the stories did not appeal at all and I suppose one could expect that from a book with such a wide range of authors with it's covers. On only a few occasions did I think of this being from a woman's point of view.

This book on travel now moves to it's next adventure with AnnaLibrarian in the US.
Yay! I have a couple of books ahead of this on my TBR stack, but I'll get to it soon.
I was cruising along and thought I'd have this finished in mid-September, and then I hit a few road blocks. However, I finished the book over lunch today and I'll be sending it off to the next reader on the list tomorrow. Thanks for sharing it with us!
I could not connect with many of the writers, particularly in the essays that seemed to be beyond pointless. However, quite a few were able to grab my attention and keep me reading through to the end. From comments made by other readers, it seems my experience with the book is not unique.

in the mail to the next reader... USPS 0305 0830 0001 3363 2630
This arrived about a month ago, before I left for vacation. Sorry it has taken me so long to journal it. I didn't realize it was part of a ring (thought it was from a relay) so I will try to get to it soon.
I read these essays with varying degrees of interest. What did interest me is that this genre exists. It's good to hear (as a travel writer wannabe), that it's not necessary to go somewhere unexplored or to have a unique experience in order to publish. "It doesn't matter where you go; it's your interpretation of it that matters." Thanks for sharing this.
Sending to mamikaem.
Received this while I was out of the country. I have a few rings in front of it, but will get to it as soon as I can. Thanks for the bookmark, minniemack! dschinny, your original bookmark is still with the book!
UPDATE: 04/03/06 - since I'm the last on this ray, it has moved to the bottom of my ring/ray TBR stack. I will continue it on its journey after I've read it!
05/04/06 - I liked most of the stories in here. I had to start with the last one about Bangladesh since I was just there in February!
