Tony Hillerman is no stranger to mystery lovers - this book first came out more than 20 years ago. It follows his now familiar pattern of placing Navajo Tribal Police sergeant Jim Chee in the middle of a crime scene in which his extensive knowledge of tribal families, traditions, and the territory itself will all be needed to unravel the mystery and bring the criminals to justice. Along the way, readers gain insight about this fascinating part of our American family. The book and author are not now as ground-breaking as they were when few others were placing mysteries in this setting, but Hillerman's many fans will still enjoy this early view of Chee, and new readers (we had a few in a recent book-club discussion) are likely to be intrigued.
