I love this book! As much as I wanted to like the protagonist, he definitely brought a lot of his angst on himself. I could definitely relate to the music references, having a large vinyl collection myself.

I wouldn't put it in my "top 5", but what a fun book!

Great insight into the male thought process about love and relationships. Very witty...read it and laugh!

I look forward to reading more of Nick Hornby's work.

Well written, wry, funny and a little sad, High Fidelity is an intimate look at the inside of a single, thirty-something male's brain. Very entertaining. Loved this description from page 23, about "losing it" after a break-up.
"I lost the plot for a while then. And I lost the subplot, the script, the soundtrack, the intermission, my popcorn, the credits and the exit sign."

Sending to lauraloo29. Enjoy!

arrived today....
the books are piling up, but hopefully I will get to it soon.
I loved this movie, so I am looking forward to it.

10/5 I dove in this morning. This will probably go very quickly... so far, so good.

10/9 This was a fast read. I loved the way music was part of the story. Made me think about my Top 5!! Probably a fairly realistic profile of the 30 something single male!! Will mail to Alectoness, hopefully today.

Off to Australia via airmail, so it should arrive in about 1 week!

13 October, 2004:

Arrived in the mail today, and have started reading all ready. So exciting to receive a package from America in the letterbox, and see the "signatures" from antsnax, flakes and deadsteen on the back cover.

15 October, 2004:

This was a book that I wanted to read while I was doing other things - while working on websites, while doing homework, while sitting in meetings, I was wanting to read this book. It was also a book that almost made me miss my stop on the train a couple of times.

Really liked the film when I finally got around to seeing it last year, and now I can say I've read and enjoyed the book that inspired it. Thanks to antsnax for starting the ring.

In the top five of the year probably, even if not of all time.

Just waiting for blacksheeps99 to PM me an address, and then it'll be in the mail.

Funny book! It really gives a good inside of male thinking and behaviour, but of course that doesn't mean we're all like this. In fact, I think the guy is rather annoying in his behaviour.
Mr Commitment from Mike Gayle is about the same topic, lack of commitment and problems of us people around thirty. I'd say I prefer the Gayle book.

Thank you, Buchsuch, for sending this across the ocean! I just got it today. I have quite a few books in front of this one, but it seems to be an easy read. I might be tempted to cheat and start right away. ;o)

I'll update this journal entry as I go. Thank you for sharing this!

Update 7/31/05
I contacted deadsteen today to get an address. I am halfway through this book. I'll post my final comments once I am done.

Update 8/6/05
I am obviously confused! :o) The next BXer in line is Foucault, and I PMed him two days ago. I'll mail this book out as soon as I get an address. In the meantime...

7 out of 10

I finished this book last night and the words that come to my mind to define it of it are not the ones I look forward to when reading a book: fair, tepid, even... It was an okay read, but it is not a book that I will remember six months from now.

I was expecting a hilarious book about relationships through the eyes of a 90's man and I got instead a mildy funny book about relationships through the perspective of a very sad male specimen. I could not bring myself to care about Rob's character, his childish problems, his shallow emotions or his rushed epiphany at the end of the book.

None of the other characters were much more likable either, so this book left me hanging there, waiting for something to happen that would explain the great reviews this book had gathered.

I am willing to try another of this author's book, since this was his first novel. I hope his next one delivers the goods. :o)

This book has not been rated.

I sent a second PM to Foucault on 8/10/05. I will wait a couple more days to send a 3rd one. If I do not get a response, I'll contact the ring organizer.

Update 8/19/05
I haven't heard from Foucault, so I will post a message on the Bookring/ray forum and I will contact the organizer of this ray today.

Update 8/23/05
I contacted the ring organizer again today to find out what to do with this book.

Journal Entry 21 by Ilios from Tampa, Florida USA on Sunday, August 28, 2005

This book has not been rated.

I am not quite sure what to do with this book. I have contacted Foucault many times, including through a ISO thread on the fora, to no avail. According to feedback from other BXers, he has not been answering PMs lately.

Also, I contacted the ring organizer and didn't get a response. It is my understanding that this is a ring, therefore I am not at liberty to release it in the wild, but I feel bad to keep the book here, once I finished it almost a month ago. I hope antsnax will get this entry and contact me.
