7 out of 10

Bring me back the Kinsey Millhone of A-M!!! I loved that Kinsey and afterwards it all started to peter out. I'm sure a lot of people will disagree with me on that last statement, but too bad.

brief outline with no spoilers:
This episode finds our heroine contracted to take a job sort of out of the ordinary for her. One Mr. Lafferty has hired her to bring home his daughter, Reba Lafferty, who is being released on parole from the California Institution for Women in Corona, CA. Reba, it seems, had embezzled some $350,000 from her employer, Mr. Alan Beckwith, and went on to serve time in prison for her crime. Well, Kinsey shows up to escort her home and then to be available to Reba for a couple of days until she gets the hang of being out of the joint. (Sorry, I know that's a terrible word for prison, but I can't help it) Anyway, things go nicely for the first couple of days, then Kinsey & Reba meet at Rosie's (Grafton fans are familiar with Rosie's so no explanation necessary) for dinner. As they are eating, in walks ("accidentally", of course) Reba's old friend Beckwith. After that, things start happening very quickly. Seems that Reba has some old scores to settle, and Kinsey gets dragged along to make sure that Reba comes out okay. This part of the plot is actually fun, although we don't get to see the old Kinsey at work.

There are also a few other subplots involving Kinsey and a new romantic interest and Kinsey's landlord Henry and his romantic problems. Since I don't enjoy romances (or for the most part romantic scenes in novels), I pretty much skimmed these parts to get back to the relevant part of the plot.

All in all, it wasn't bad, but I would have liked more action & more of Kinsey from before. I also enjoy reading these books because we used to live in Santa Barbara for 4 years, the setting for Grafton's fictional Santa Teresa. So when she mentions different locations in her stories, I can actually pinpoint them in my head.

now off to labspecimen (rather than tesslouise).

6 out of 10

I finished reading this book today during lunch. This book is a departure from from the other books in the series in that (a) Kinsey isn't investigating anything and (b) She's not really the main character.

I'll be releasing this book on my way home from work today by either wild releasing it at a pub, bus stop, etc., or asking if anybody on the bus wants it.
