Pieni, mutta kompakti kirja (223 s.) sisältää Ranskasta Suomeen muuttaneen Philippen kirjeitä ranskalaiselle ystävälleen Samuelille. Philippe kertoo hauskalla tavalla kommelluksistaan suomalaisten ilmiöiden parissa ja leikittelee suomen kielellä. Pidän tästä todella paljon ja voin sanoa nauraneeni aivan kippurassa näille jutuille, vaikka kyseessä on tavallisen elämänmenon kuvausta ja arkisia asioita.

Osallistuin rinkiin, jotta saisin taas kerrattua ranskantaitojani.

Journal Entry 6 by Tintti from Tampere, Pirkanmaa / Birkaland Finland on Wednesday, December 8, 2004

Hauska kirja.

Book arrived today. Thanks, chrisim ja tintti. I read it at once, but in Finnish only. I have to admit I've never learned any French. Guicheteau's stories about Finns remind me of the comments I hear from my Dutch friend. I don't think Guicheteau has found out anything new about Finnish people. White lies are something that never occured to me, though. Pipo päässä is a horrifying lesson of conversation skills. Book was fun to read.

Sain kirjan tänään dotdotilta. Minulla on useampi kirjarinki tällä hetkellä kotona, joten lukemiseen saattaa mennä jonkin verran aikaa...

EDIT: Aloitin lukemisen 20.1.2005

Journal Entry 9 by wingAnneliswing from Kerava, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Tuesday, July 12, 2005
Sain kirjan kuukausikokouksessa Hesassa. Näyttää hauskalta kirjalta ranskan taitojen kohentamiseen!

Edit 2.8.2005
No, eipä ainakaan puutu hyvää lukemista. Pipo päässä ja aikakäsite mm. antoivat uutta perspektiiviä suomalaiseen olemiseemme.

I liked this book a lot and would have liked even more if I had had time to read the French text. Now I only looked it every now and then. I wanted to see how some things were expressed in French. Sous le sablier de Saturne and Le bonnet dans la tête among others made me see some things differently from before.

Pidin kirjasta todella paljon, kirjeet olivat hauskoja, ja nauroinkin useampaan otteeseen niille. Kirjailija on tehnyt hyviä huomioita meistä suomalaisista! :D)

Kirja jatkaa matkaansa ensi viikolla.

Journal Entry 15 by septentria from Amplepuis, Rhône-Alpes France on Monday, September 26, 2005
Quel excellent petit livre!

Now, let's try in English for the previous Finnish readers!
What an excellent little book! I love very much these letters, full of humor and kindness towards Finland and its unhabitants. I felt the writer really fell in love with this country, and I can understand it! "Sunnuntaikirjeitä Suomesta" reminded me little of the "Persan Letters" by Voltaire, in its fine analysis of a country and its traditions...
Anyway, I guess expatriation must be an exciting experience, especially in Finland! But I must say I'm not objective at all: I'm definitely "scandinavian-phile"!!! ;-)
Now I try to introduce the few Finnih words I learnt in the book in my conversations, but it's not easy... I think I'll remember "kyllä luonto on todella kaunis"!

Maintenant, je fais la passe à Tweesty!

Thank you Chrisim.

Icila wants to be skipped (lucky her, she goes to Congo for holidays!)

Me too found this book absolutely lovely! I was continuously smiling when reading it. Thank you for this nice reading, Chrisim. I already have Mrrr's address, so the book should soon be in Switzerland.

update: Book sent on February 22, 2006.

A year and a half later... this book as arrived in my mailbox! (don't worry chrisim, I had no problem with me being at the end of your list!)
As always, Murphy has been very skilled lately... so I have other books already waiting on my TBR. But the pile is not too high! I am really looking forward to read this book as I really like the nordic countries (I did not say scandinavians as I was once told that Finland is not a scandinavian country!)... And Finland has a particular place in my heart as this is where M.Mrrr and I did our honeymoon trip :)
He (M.Mrrr) might actually be willing to read it too. I hope that you would not mind chrisim?
I'll give you more news when I'm done with the book.

I can't say this in Finnish (yet) so just a quick thanks to chrisim; now I've read through all previous JEs and am looking forward to reading this lovely little book.

Journal Entry 25 by Mrrr from La Chaux-de-Fonds, Neuchâtel Switzerland on Thursday, April 27, 2006
Roooooh!

Shame on me!!! I completely forgot to write a JE.... You're bad Mrrrr, you're really bad....
So, here is my opinion on this book:
This was an entertaining read but not an unforgettable one... I have to admit that I expected more a description of Finland rather than a description of Finns.
However this review of Finns, their way of life and their so peculiar language is rather pleasant!
This said, I think that the point of view developped here is typical French. Or, I should rather say that it is typical from a French expatriate (and I know what I'm talking about), who tends to compare everything with France and the French people... Some points of the finnish nature, described by Guicheteau as typical from this country, would most probably appear as perfectly normal to a Swiss guy for example...
As I assumed, Mr Mrrr read the book before me (while it was standing on my TBR). Our point of view does not differ much, but I reckon that he enjoyed it a bit more than myself: I could hear him giggling from time to time!

Sorry chrisim for messing up this journal... I guess it will be back to "normal" once silentmiaouw has made a new JE.

Journal Entry 26 by over-the-moon from Lausanne, Vaud Switzerland on Thursday, May 4, 2006

And now in English:

I was slightly disappointed by this charming little book, and having reached the end I had the impression of knowing more about the author than about the Finnish character he was trying to describe. Sometimes he made me shudder, for example when he seems surprised that in an 18th-century French dictionary the entry about Finland refers him to Sweden. Isn't he aware that Finland was part of Sweden, then of Imperial Russia, until the government declared independence in 1917? And his analysis of Finnish surnames, saying that many end in -nen, is just as daft as saying that many Italian names end in i: Berlusconi, Prodi, Bellucci, Mastroianni... etc.

However, it is a nice book for anyone visiting this land of lakes and forest.
I'm waiting for kaisabr's address, and will include in the parcel a little guide to Finland (in French) - as according to Guicheteau you like reading what people think about your country.

Luin kirjan eilen illalla yhdellä kerralla. Luin vain suomenkieliset osat. Kirja muistuttaa Roman Schatzin Rakkaudella Suomesta - teosta.

I´m sorry but my French isn´t good enough to write this in French. I read the book yesterday in the evening, only in Finnish. It reminds me of Roman Schatz´s From Finland With Love. There were some really good parts in Courrier de Finlande, I had a good laugh :) Some I had already heard. Especially I liked the time perspective :) And it´s also true that we Finns are all the time asking "What do you think of Finland?" :)

Thank you for this great bookray. I already know a couple of people waiting to read this. Have a nice summer everyone!
