The more I read Reichs, the more I wonder why I persisted with Cornwell's Scarpetta series for so long when Reichs' Tempe Brennan is a far better character, imo. I started this on Friday afternoon, off sick from work and had finished it a little over 24 hours later. The story was interesting and, again, made me want to read more about South America, and I just couldn't wait to see what happened next.

Safely received in this morning's post. This will be my third Reichs in a short time and if it's half as good as the other two I know I'm in for a treat!
Journal Entry 7 by SwanOfKennet from Edinburgh, Scotland United Kingdom on Tuesday, September 28, 2004
Tempe Brennan is in Guatemala, investigating the mass graves of Mayan victims of civil war massacres. But there are things that somebody doesn't want her to uncover...
The premise of this book is smashing, but somehow it misfired for me. The action is thrilling, but the dialogue often feels clunky and unconvincing. At times it feels like a Blue Peter special on biochemistry, which is very useful to a crime writer but which holds up the action.
Still, I bet being in Dr Reichs's class at the University of North Carolina is a real treat!

I'm afraid this book just didn't do it for me, and it has fallen foul of my "100 page" rule. I just couldn't get into the writing, the characters or the storyline. I really didn't care about "Tempe Brennan" and spent most of my time reading this wondering why crime writers can't call their main characters Jane Brown or Sarah Jones (cf Cornwell's "Scarpetta" and Grafton's "Kinsey Millhone"). It also irritated me that this was another "female away from home/family" who wistfully dreams of her relationship with the "wrong" man (who always seems to have "crags" in all the right places!).
In short, there just didn't seem to be anything new in this novel I hadn't read elsewhere.
Thanks to perfect-circle and SwanOfKenet for passing this book on to me, and apologies I couldn't give it a better rating. I'll be taking this to the Glasgow meet with me on Saturday (30th October). Hopefully someone else will get on better with it than I did.

Not a bad thriller, if you like Patricia Cornwell's Scarpetta then you'll be at home with this one.
