Journal Entry 1 by Thorngage from Mainz, Rheinland-Pfalz Germany on Thursday, July 15, 2004
The Amazing Maurice runs the perfect Pied Piper scam. This streetwise alley cat knows the value of cold, hard cash and can talk his way into and out of anything. But when Maurice and his cohorts decide to con the town of Bad Blintz, it will take more than fast talking to survive the danger that awaits. For this is a town where food is scarce and rats are hated, where cellars are lined with deadly traps, and where a terrifying evil lurks beneath the hunger-stricken streets...

I liked it.
It wasn't the funniest Terry Pratchett book but still a lot of fun to read.
I've already pmed barnhelm for the address.

Journal Entry 11 by barnhelm from Fulda, Hessen Germany on Thursday, September 15, 2005

I really liked this one as much as the "Discworld for grown-ups"-novels. It took me some time reading it, although I've read most of it in one day (while being in hospital waiting for my baby...;-)), but I've enjoyed it nevertheless!

I'll be sending it on as soon as get hoefis address.

Journal Entry 14 by hoefi from Lauf an der Pegnitz, Bayern Germany on Friday, November 11, 2005
Arrived safely in Munich today.

Journal Entry 15 by hoefi from Lauf an der Pegnitz, Bayern Germany on Tuesday, November 29, 2005
Finished!

Well, that was quite a diffrent Pratchett compared to the ones i read bevore. And it was my first one in english.
I found it quite intresting that he uses quite a lot of german names.

I really enjoyed it.

This book will go to Britain as soon as i recieved the address from DJgib.

edit 20.12.2005:
Well, the book stayed for a while and had a rest on my desk. I'll bring it to the post office today.

Journal Entry 16 by DJgib from Cambridge, Cambridgeshire United Kingdom on Thursday, December 22, 2005
Maurice has arrived safely in the UK. I have a few rings at the moment, but will have quite a lot of time over Christmas so should have it read fairly soon.

Journal Entry 17 by DJgib from Cambridge, Cambridgeshire United Kingdom on Sunday, January 8, 2006
This was really different from other books by Pratchett that I've read (all Discworld stuff); less humour and more mystery. But I did like it and really got into it toward the end. I loved the rats' names and I was tickled that Death of Rats was in it, he's my favourite Discworld character.

Thanks for sharing Sheepseeker. RonOren will pick up the book soon.

Journal Entry 18 by RonOren from Wassenaar, Zuid-Holland Netherlands on Wednesday, January 11, 2006
Indeed, I did pick it up. Which means that it's transferred to my side of the bookshelfs; since there's another two rings to go before it, it may take a mintue for me to get to it. I'll try to read it as soon as possible, though.

Journal Entry 19 by RonOren from Wassenaar, Zuid-Holland Netherlands on Saturday, January 21, 2006
Lovely book! I really liked how the rats turn almost human, with all our vices and the little virtues that we have; yet, they don't quite make it, do they? As Dangerous Beans (brilliant name, by the way!) says, they're only rats in the end.
I don't agree with some of the earlier journalers that it's that different from the Discworld series proper. It has a little less humor, or rather, the humor is less in your face (especially with the footnotes missing; and I did truly miss them), but the feeling is more or less the same for me. Talking cats and actual rat-pipers are not the sort of creatures that one would expect to find in any old town on this world, are they?

The part I liked best, I think, is when Maurice finds out that he has a conscience, and promptly doesn't trust it to be different from the Rat-king. How recognizable - well, not the Rat-king, maybe, but the not trusting of one's conscience!

I really enjoyed this one. Thanks for sharing it, Sheepseeker! I'll send it off to linguistkris on my way to hockey. Hope she'll like it as much!

Journal Entry 20 by RonOren from Wassenaar, Zuid-Holland Netherlands on Saturday, January 21, 2006
Sent off to linguistkris this morning. Hope you'll like it!

Journal Entry 21 by linguistkris from Remscheid, Nordrhein-Westfalen Germany on Tuesday, January 31, 2006
Thanks! Maurice and his rats safely found their way into my mailbox while I was away exploring the wilds of Saxony-Anhalt (Schloss Goseck) with my new-found colleagues from MPI-EVA.

Journal Entry 22 by linguistkris from Remscheid, Nordrhein-Westfalen Germany on Tuesday, February 14, 2006
I've only just started reading this, and I need to stop and say just how enjoyable this is! I hadn't actually fully realised this was a discworld novel, but find that that only makes it better, I mean, in which ordinairy fairytale would the mere mentioning of guards or a university make the readers chuckle? Really, this is such a treat! And I *am* enjoying the German bits (and can't help feeling sorry for the translator).

Journal Entry 23 by linguistkris from Remscheid, Nordrhein-Westfalen Germany on Friday, February 17, 2006
What a great book! It has just about everything a good story needs: I laughed, I cried, I loved the allusions, I recognised myself and my friends in the characters -- I think I need to buy a copy for my personal collection.

Two of my favourite bits (albeit there pretty much wasn't a page without a hot candidate):

'It means we can break into their shed and solve the mystery of the bootlace tails!' said Malicia. She gave Maurice a critical look. 'Of course, it would be more satisfying if we were four children and a dog, which is the right number for an adventure, but we'll make do with what we've got.'
Just when my backpack book (for reading on the bus) is an Enid Blyton Mystery!

'Just like crop circles. No matter how many aliens own up to making them, there are always a few diehards who believe that humans go out with garden rollers in the middle of the night-'

From the first mention of Malicia on, I always imagined her as my RL and BC friend starqueen, and the more it went on the more she resembled her!

Journal Entry 28 by katayoun from Tehran, Tehran Iran on Wednesday, August 2, 2006
heard from Pitangus (and chomper also, who wanted to be skipped :)) and the book is on it's way to Pitangus. mailed today and it shouldn't take more than a 2 to 3 weeks to get there, hopefully and touch wood!

Journal Entry 29 by Pitangus from Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires Province Argentina on Friday, August 11, 2006
I have received it! Maurice and the rats are finally in my hands ;) - Thank you Katayoun!
[I haven't been able to contact her before as I had been traveling (and stated so in my profile) but luckily came back in time before the book, Maurice and the rats travelled to the US. However, they'll be travelling soon, as I shall start reading tonight]. I just love rodents! my pets are two mice, and we shall see if they are enough educated as this travelling rats :) ;)

Journal Entry 30 by Pitangus from Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires Province Argentina on Monday, August 14, 2006
I think the story is pretty funny in the beginning and then it turns out sort of eerie and mysterious... I don't know what was really the point of the king rat's character, and the doubting and lost of faith that Dangerous Beans faces... I have thought the story would be more like other average Discworld novel, but it isn't, it's quite different. However I have enjoyed a lot the rat's names, and my favourite characters turned out to be Sardines "the Fred Astaire-ish Rat" :) and the stupid-looking kid, which was just hilarious how the characters are always referring to him! Oh, and Terry Pratchett's picture at the back of the front cover is wonderful! ;)

I shall contact Chomper, perhaps doesn't want still to be skipped. If it is so, then I'll contact the next bookcrosser.

Journal Entry 31 by Pitangus from Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires Province Argentina on Tuesday, August 15, 2006

Journal Entry 33 by BigrTex from Colorado Springs, Colorado USA on Thursday, November 16, 2006
Arrived in the mail today. I look forward to reading it on vacation next week.

Thanks!

Journal Entry 34 by BigrTex from Colorado Springs, Colorado USA on Tuesday, January 2, 2007
It was Pratchett for children. He tried to be humorous (and frequently was) and appeal to children (which I'm not sure how well he did) and it felt like there was a moral under the surface as well. Not as good as many of his 'adult' discworld novels, but I'm glad that I read it. I have the second in this 'series' around here somewhere, and look forward to reading it soon.

Sorry this took so long, my reading has slowed down a lot lately.
